The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Teacher Education program at Â鶹ӳ»´«Ã½ prepares you to become a certified secondary education teacher and give middle and high school students the support they need to reach their full potential. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree in a non-education field, this master’s in teaching degree offers a direct pathway into teaching through a state-approved teacher certification program.
As you move through this graduate teacher education program, you’ll learn from expert faculty with real-world experience in grades 6 –12 classrooms as you build essential knowledge and skills in classroom management, student assessment, and effective instructional strategies for various learners, including English language learners. You’ll also develop subject-matter expertise by choosing a specialization in core areas of secondary education, such as mathematics, art, science or, English language arts — strengthening your preparation for teaching opportunities.
A defining feature of this MAT degree is the two-semester internship, where you’ll gain sustained, real-world teaching experience. You’ll work alongside experienced mentor teachers, receive continuous feedback and gradually take on full classroom responsibility. This extended internship also allows you to develop strong professional connections.
By successfully completing this state-approved initial teacher preparation program — including a two-semester internship with an on-the-job option, professional portfolio and passing scores on the Florida Teacher Certification Examination — you’ll meet Florida certification requirements and graduate ready to lead your own classroom.
This program prepares students for state-regulated professional licensure or certification. For more information on how this program may prepare you in that regard, please view the licensure disclosure for the program.
