And now, she鈥檚 a Knight.

On Wednesday, long-time UCLA women鈥檚 head coach Jeanette Bolden was appointed as the next head coach of the 麻豆映画传媒 track and field program.

鈥淚鈥檓 extremely excited and also honored that Todd Stansbury has the faith in me to lead the track and field program,鈥 Bolden said. 鈥溌槎褂郴 is a fresh and vibrant university and has a lot of opportunities for young people. I plan to continue the upward arc of the program. Coach Caryl (Smith Gilbert) invested a lot in the team, and I just want to continue the successful path that she started to pave.

鈥淚 have been at UCLA all my life and I am grateful for the opportunities I had there. I will always be indebted to them, and I thank the athletic department, especially (athletic director) Dan Guerrero, for all they have done for me.鈥

Bolden, who comes to Orlando after spending the last 20 years at her alma mater, will fill the void left by Caryl Smith Gilbert, who accepted the position of director of men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 track and field at USC in early June. Bolden inherits a program that has skyrocketed to the top of collegiate track and field in recent years. The Knights have won six Conference USA titles (4 outdoor, 2 indoor), recorded two top-five finishes at the NCAA Championships and racked up more than 50 All-America honors.

鈥淲e鈥檙e very excited to have a coach the caliber of Jeanette Bolden join the 麻豆映画传媒 family,鈥 said Todd Stansbury, Vice President and Director of . 鈥淭o hire a Hall of Fame coach, who has won an Olympic gold medal, coached Olympic champions and led teams to multiple NCAA Championships shows the level of commitment we have to women鈥檚 track and field here at 麻豆映画传媒. We currently have one of the top teams in the nation. With Coach Bolden leading our efforts, I believe we can become a long-term powerhouse track and field program.鈥

Bolden’s accomplishments as a collegiate head coach, U. S. Olympic head coach and gold-medal winning U. S. Olympic athlete are unmatched in the world of track and field. As the Bruins鈥 head coach from 1994-2013, she led UCLA to three NCAA team championships — the 2004 outdoor and the 2000 and 2001 indoor titles. They were the first national indoor track and field crowns 鈥 men鈥檚 or women鈥檚 鈥 in school history.

A specialist with sprinters and hurdlers, Bolden also mentored four Bruins to six NCAA outdoor individual championships: Nicole Leach (2007/2009, 400H), Monique Henderson (2005, 400M), Sheena Johnson (2003/2004, 400H) and Joanna Hayes (1999, 400H). Since 1994, Bolden has coached more than 50 UCLA All-Americans in the sprints, hurdles and relays.

Under her direction, the Bruins won 10 Pac-10 Conference titles, including eight consecutive from 1997-2004. She is a 10-time Pac-10 Coach of the Year and nine-time United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) West Region Coach of the Year.

In 2006, Bolden earned one of the highest honors of her distinguished coaching career when she was named head coach of the U.S. women’s track and field team for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. She was the first head coach in U.S. Olympic history to have won an Olympic medal as an athlete. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Bolden earned a gold medal on the U.S. women’s 4×100 relay and placed fourth in the 100 meters.

In Beijing, Bolden led the American women to, at the time, their third-highest medal count (23) in U.S. Olympic history and the most since the 1992 Barcelona Games. Bolden helped coach Dawn Harper (gold, 100H), Johnson (bronze, 400H) and Henderson (gold, 4×400 Relay) to Olympic glory.

On Feb. 13, 2004, Bolden was presented the prestigious C. Vivian Stringer Award, an accolade which is presented to a woman who has experienced outstanding achievement as a coach – exhibiting a high standard of propriety, imagination and innovation as a character builder in the tradition of great teacher-coaches.

Six years later, she was inducted to the USTFCCCA Hall of Fame.

Bolden has served on a number of NCAA and track and field boards and has been an assistant coach for the World Indoor and Outdoor Championships. In 1998, she was named the USOC Track & Field Developmental Coach of the Year. In 1994, Bolden served as an assistant coach for the West squad at the Olympic Festival in St. Louis, Mo. and in 2006, she served as the head coach for the 2006 World Cup, which was held in Greece.

As an athlete at UCLA from 1981-83, Bolden was a five-time All-America performer. In 1982, she helped lead the Bruins to their first NCAA Outdoor championship. She graduated in 1983 with a degree in sociology. She served as an assistant for two years before taking over the program in 1994.

Bolden and her family own the famous 27th Street Bakery in Los Angeles. She and her husband of 25 years, Al, have two children, twins Anthony and Kimberly, age 13.

Cross Country: 麻豆映画传媒 Coach New USC Director of Track and Field /news/cross-country-ucf-coach-new-usc-director-of-track-and-field/ Mon, 17 Jun 2013 19:37:15 +0000 /news/?p=50282 During a mid-morning team meeting, 麻豆映画传媒鈥檚 head women鈥檚 track and field coach informed her team that she had accepted the Director of Track and Field position at the University of Southern California. Later in the afternoon, the Knights were honored with a luncheon and reception to celebrate their many accomplishments during the past year, which included the school鈥檚 first-ever NCAA Champion and top-five finishes at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

鈥淚 set out on a mission to make this program a track and field superpower,鈥 Smith Gilbert said. 鈥淲e were in the top five, both indoor and outdoor, this year. So I think the program is definitely headed in the right direction. I want to thank Todd Stansbury, Jessica Reo, Keith Tribble and so many others for the opportunity, the help and all the assistance they gave us to get us to this point. President Hitt is very supportive of the team and everybody at 麻豆映画传媒 embraced us. We made major strides in this program.

鈥淥rlando is a great place. 麻豆映画传媒 is a great place,鈥 Smith Gilbert continued. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be very sad. I鈥檓 excited about embarking on a new adventure. But it is going to be very hard for me to leave. We grew as a family, so they鈥檙e more than just my athletes. They鈥檙e like my little sisters and daughters. I taught them everything I could.鈥

In her new role at USC, Smith Gilbert will be responsible for all aspects of the Trojans鈥 men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 track and field programs.

During her 麻豆映画传媒 tenure, the Knights won six Conference USA outdoor and indoor crowns. Her athletes were named All-America more than 100 times and set more than 100 school records. In the classroom, her team鈥檚 GPA exceeded 3.0 nearly every term during her tenure.

鈥淐aryl Smith Gilbert and our student-athletes are responsible for our women鈥檚 track and field program being recognized among the best in the nation,鈥 said 麻豆映画传媒 Vice President and Director of Athletics Todd Stansbury. 鈥淪he is an amazing coach and an amazing person. We certainly understand that when you have a coach who has accomplished the sort of things Coach Caryl has, that she will be presented with other opportunities. We thank her for everything she has done at 麻豆映画传媒 and wish her and her family nothing but the best in the future.鈥

In 2013, 麻豆映画传媒鈥檚 fifth-place showing at the NCAA outdoor meet was the best finish by a non-BCS school since 2000 and its 35 points more than doubled the previous program best. Smith Gilbert was named the USTFCCA South Region Coach of the Year for a fifth time in 2013 as she guided 麻豆映画传媒 to its first-ever Top-10 outdoor ranking in the USTFCCCA poll. She was the only coach to have three 100-meter runners ranked among the Top 10-seeded qualifiers at the NCAA meet. Twelve school records were broken during the 2013 outdoor season while the team won its fourth-straight C-USA title, a feat unmatched by any other women’s track and field program in C-USA history. Octavious Freeman was the C-USA Track Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year.

麻豆映画传媒 also finished fifth at the 2013 NCAA indoor meet, as Aurieyall Scott won the 60-meter dash to become the school鈥檚 first NCAA champion in any sport. Scott was also the C-USA Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.

麻豆映画传媒鈥檚 eighth-place finish at the 2012 NCAA indoor meet was the program鈥檚 best at the time. 麻豆映画传媒 won the C-USA outdoor title and capped the season by sending four Knights to compete at the USA Olympic Trials. In 2011, 麻豆映画传媒 swept the indoor and outdoor C-USA titles as Jackie Coward was named C-USA Track Athlete of the Year and 麻豆映画传媒’s first two-time All-America first-teamer. Smith Gilbert was C-USA’s outdoor and indoor Coach of the Year. She led the 2010 Knights to the C-USA Outdoor championship. Coward became 麻豆映画传媒鈥檚 first NCAA Outdoor All-American, finishing fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

In Smith Gilbert鈥檚 first two seasons at 麻豆映画传媒, 2008 and 2009, her athletes broke 30 of the school’s indoor and outdoor school records. She also served as the jumps and multi-events coach of Team USA at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin.

Smith Gilbert came to 麻豆映画传媒 after five seasons (2003-07) as an assistant coach at Tennessee, where she was responsible for coaching sprints, hurdles and jumps. Smith Gilbert was an assistant coach at Alabama for three years (2000-02) and held similar responsibilities as an assistant at Penn State for two seasons (1998-99). Prior to becoming a collegiate coach, Smith Gilbert was the head coach for four seasons (1994-97) at her prep alma mater, George Washington High in Denver.

Track Top 5: Kansas, A&M, Oregon, LSU, 麻豆映画传媒 /news/track-top-5-kansas-am-oregon-lsu-ucf/ Sun, 09 Jun 2013 02:19:55 +0000 /news/?p=50071 Knights earn best finish by non-BCS program in 13 years

    ]]>
The 2013 麻豆映画传媒 track and field team has a habit of writing and rewriting history. It comes as no surprise, then, that the Knights capped their ground-breaking season Saturday as a top-5 team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

With 35 points, the Knights earned the best finish by a non-BCS team since 2000 (BYU, 4th place). They more than doubled their previous program-best point total (16 points, 2011) at an NCAA Outdoor Championship meet to take fifth place behind perennial powers national champion Kansas, Texas A&M, Oregon and LSU.

“This is the best finish in 麻豆映画传媒 history so I’m very excited about it,” 麻豆映画传媒 head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said. “It was a big year. It was an exciting year. It was a year full of surprises. More than the finishes, the records and the championships – all of the things and injuries we overcame is (an even bigger deal) to me. Everyone stepped up and pulled through. Everyone on the team started believing that we could make things happen.”

麻豆映画传媒 entered the final day of competition with three scoring opportunities up for grabs in the 4×100 relay and 200 meters.

Alexis Faulknor, Aurieyall Scott, Afia Charles and Octavious Freeman finished runner-up to SEC Champion Texas A&M in the relay with their time of 43.36. Freeman blitzed down the final stretch, blowing by the field while hunting down the Aggies to give the Knights their best relay finish at the meet in school history, first team All-America status and eight points toward the team standings.

Roughly 30 minutes later, Freeman and Scott were at the blocks again ready to challenge LSU’s Kimberlyn Duncan – the two-time defending champion – in the 200-meter finals. Although Duncan successfully repeated, Scott earned her best finish in an individual outdoor championship final with her third-place, all-conditions personal-best of 22.48 (+3.5).

The NCAA indoor 60-meter national champion collected three first team All-American honors at this year’s meet, bringing her career total to an unparalleled 14 distinctions.

Freeman finished seventh in the race in 22.92, also picking up her third first team All-American honor of the meet. She now boasts nine career awards.

Throughout the four-day meet, the Knights brought in four medalist performances from Jen Clayton (long jump), Scott (200M), Freeman (100M) and the 4×100 relay in front of a combined attendance of 40,446.

Several Knights will set their sights on the Junior and Senior USA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, held June 20-23.

Scott Sprints to 麻豆映画传媒’s First NCAA Championship /news/scott-sprints-to-ucfs-first-ncaa-championship/ Sun, 10 Mar 2013 03:13:51 +0000 /news/?p=46762 Competing for the Black and Gold on the nation’s grandest stage, Aurieyall Scott made history on Saturday night.

The junior track and field star became 麻豆映画传媒’s first NCAA champion of any sport by claiming first place in the 60 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She joins an elite group of Knights who have won national championships: cheerleading (UCA; 2003, 2007) and volleyball (AIAW; 1978).

“What a historic night for 麻豆映画传媒 track and field,” 麻豆映画传媒 head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said. “We had two unbelievable performances. Aurieyall Scott is an NCAA champion and Octavious Freeman was third in the 60 meters. As a team, we finished fifth with only two athletes scoring. I am very proud and excited for the great weekend they had, and this is just an indication of things to come for the outdoor season. Both of these young women have sacrificed a lot and worked very hard to get to this point, so it is exciting to watch them reap the benefits of their work.”

Scott matched her personal record 7.13, which is fifth-fastest time in collegiate history and makes her the fourth-best performer in the event all-time. She edged Oregon’s reigning champion English Gardner (7.15) and was joined on the medalist stand by her teammate and roommate Freeman, who earned her second bronze medal with a season-best time of 7.16.

Coupled with their silver and bronze finishes in Friday’s 200 meters, 麻豆映画传媒’s dynamic duo were responsible for scoring the most points in program history (30) at the NCAA Championships for the Knights’ best finish ever at fifth place.

After their performances this weekend, Scott is now an 11-time All-American and Freeman is a six-time All-American.

麻豆映画传媒 opens the outdoor season Saturday in Orlando with the first of its two home meets. The Black and Gold Challenge will start at 9 a.m. with the javelin at the 麻豆映画传媒 Track and Field Complex.

Track Champs: 麻豆映画传媒 Wins Indoor Title /news/track-champs-ucf-wins-indoor-title/ Mon, 25 Feb 2013 02:08:31 +0000 /news/?p=46338 The Knights clinched their fifth overall C-USA title.

    ]]>
Not only did the No. 10 麻豆映画传媒 track and field team win its fifth Conference USA championship in the past three years on Sunday, but the team did it in style. The Knights erased two meet records, earned 10 medals and posted the most points at a conference indoor meet in program history.

The Knights captured the title with 132.5 points, besting runner-up Memphis by 39.5 points. Junior Aurieyall Scott earned Performance of the Meet, Alexis Faulknor won Freshman of the Meet and Caryl Smith Gilbert earned her fifth C-USA Coach of the Year honor.

In perhaps the most defining moment of the day, the sprinters swept the podium of the 60 meters. Scott bested the meet record, the school record and her personal record with a blistering performance of 7.13, which ranks as the NCAA’s new leading time. Octavious Freeman earned silver at 7.22 and Faulknor clinched the first medal of her career with a bronze finish and new PR time of 7.43. Senior Lutisha Bowen also scored points in seventh place at 7.52, giving 麻豆映画传媒 a whopping 26 points in the event.

Scott continued to impress in the 200 meters with her second meet record in the event in as many days. This year’s world leader posted the second-best time of her career (22.91) for gold. Freeman’s season-best time of 23.35 picked up a silver medal, and Faulknor hit a new personal best 24.10 to score points in fifth place.

Bowen earned her first C-USA medal with her runner-up finish in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.27.

Junior Afia Charles rewrote her own school record in the 400 meters with a personal-best 54.02, which won her heat and was six-hundredths of a second short of the leader. Her time was better than the previous meet record.

The throwers excelled with a school-record performance and two personal bests in the shot put. Precious Ogunleye captured her second school record of the weekend with a monster personal best of 15.17m/49-09.25 for fourth place. Destinee Romain topped her personal record with a mark of 14.06m/46-01.50 to tally more points in seventh place.

Freshman Anne-Marie Blaney picked up her second school record in as many days, shaving time off her precious 3,000-meter record with a sixth-place finish of 9:43.59.

The 800-meter runners had a productive day, as well, as Ne’Ausha Logan secured a bronze medal with the second-best time of her career, 2:09.77. Erica Winston fell in step behind her at 2:10.88, shaving nearly three seconds off her previous personal record.

Two jumpers added points in the high jump for the Knights. Freshman Allison Lampert produced a career-best day with a sixth-place showing of 1.68m/5-06.00. Sonnisha Williams missed her personal best by half-an-inch with a season-best leap of 1.68m/5-06.00.

Scott, Charles, Sandy Jean and Logan comprised the 4×400 relay that capped the day with a first-place finish with its second-best time of the season, 3:40.83.

麻豆映画传媒 now sets its sights on the NCAA Indoor Championships behind held at Arkansas on March 8-9. A season ago, the Knights earned their highest finish in school history (eighth place) at the meet.

Track and Field’s Success Earns Coach Contract Extension /news/track-and-fields-success-earns-coach-contract-extension/ /news/track-and-fields-success-earns-coach-contract-extension/#comments Fri, 28 Sep 2012 02:53:27 +0000 /news/?p=41342 Over the past five years, 聽has guided the track and field and cross country programs to conference championships and national prominence. Thanks to a four-year contract extension, she will continue to bring the team to new heights for a little longer.

麻豆映画传媒 signed Smith Gilbert to a deal that keeps the four-time Conference USA Coach of the Year through June 2016.

“The track and field program’s continued success both in the classroom and on the track is a testament to the hard-working student-athletes who represent 麻豆映画传媒, but it starts first and foremost with its leader,” said Todd Stansbury, vice president and director of athletics. “聽is a tremendous coach and more importantly, an even better person. She conducts herself and the team with integrity and character. We are happy that she will continue to be a Knight in the years to come.”

Under Smith Gilbert’s guidance in 2012, the track and field team earned its best finish (eighth place) at the NCAA Indoor Championships in school history. 麻豆映画传媒 won its fourth C-USA title, produced six All-Americans with 13 distinctions throughout the year and capped the season by sending four Knights to compete at the USA Olympic Trials.

Among those Olympic Trial competitors, 聽was one of two collegiate athletes who advanced to the finals of the 200 meters and finished with a school-record performance in the primetime nationally televised race.

She expects the same results off the track and constantly preaches to her student-athletes about the importance of earning their degrees. Since taking over the program, Smith Gilbert has witnessed 61 Knights merit recognition on the C-USA Academic Honor Roll for earning a grade point average of 3.0 or better. In 2012 alone, 18 members of the team earned this praise.

“I am thankful to Todd Stansbury and 麻豆映画传媒 for the opportunity to continue to lead this program,” Smith Gilbert said. “I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish so far, but our work is not finished. I am excited about this season and the many years to come as a 麻豆映画传媒 Knight.”

Olympians Charles, Trotter to Compete in 400M Friday /news/olympians-charles-trotter-to-compete-in-400m-friday/ Wed, 01 Aug 2012 19:03:06 +0000 /news/?p=39364 When DeeDee Trotter steps onto the track of Olympic Stadium on Friday, her mind will momentarily drift back to the States, back to the 麻豆映画传媒 track and field stadium and back to the women of the Knights’ track and field team.

“Every time I raced (this year), I had them in the back of my mind saying, `I’ve got to do good so I don’t let the girls down.’ I think that’s been a driving force behind me,” Trotter said. “It means so much to me to have had to opportunity to be an inspiration to these girls. They have been an inspiration to me.

Trotter, who trained with head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert for the last eight months at 麻豆映画传媒, will compete in the 400 meters Friday. She is not the only athlete Smith Gilbert has helped earn an appearance at this year’s Summer Games.

Current Knight Afia Charles became 麻豆映画传媒’s first track and field Olympian when she was invited to compete as a member of Antigua’s national team. Charles’ mother, Ruperta, ran for the country in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, so her daughter has dual citizenship.

Charles and Trotter run in round one of the 400 meters at 7 a.m. EDT hoping to advance to Saturday’s semifinals (3:05 p.m.) and finals (4:10 p.m.). NBC will begin airing coverage of track and field events Friday at 10 a.m.

Trotter earned a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens with the 4×400 relay team. She spent much of 2009 and 2010 still battling effects from a knee injury but finally broke through this past year after moving to Orlando to train with Smith Gilbert. She credits much of her success to the 麻豆映画传媒 track and field team.

“I was trying to transition myself into a new level of motivation because I was down. When I got here, they worked so hard and their level of work ethic and being out here with young ladies that are extremely talented, they just lifted me up,” Trotter said. “They looked up to me in a way that I felt a sense of responsibility to them. When I’m running, they are part of the motivation that keeps me wanting to do better.

“They have made this journey even better because watching them grow, sharing my knowledge, being able to work with them on a day-to-day basis, it was definitely destiny that we came together.”

The Knights have been equally as inspired by their mentor. This year, four student-athletes competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials capped by Aurieyall Scott’s appearance as one of two collegiate athletes who advanced to the nationally televised 200-meter finals.

Trotter has high expectations for the track and field team and believes that soon, the Knights will be adding a national championship to their many conference titles.

“The real potential of this team – I’m a professional track runner, I run on championship teams, Tennessee was a championship team when I was there, I know what champions look like and this team has it. And I’m not just saying that because I train with them every day,” Trotter said. “I’m saying that because they have the talent, they have the work ethic and they have the coach.”

Knights Gear Up for Olympic Competition /news/knights-gear-up-for-olympic-competition/ Thu, 26 Jul 2012 08:59:29 +0000 /news/?p=39234 Two Knights will showcase their athletic talents on the world鈥檚 biggest stage鈥攖he Olympics.

麻豆映画传媒 alumnus Phil Dalhausser and student Afia Charles are among the competitors vying for the gold this summer. Opening ceremonies for the London Olympics are Friday, July 27, and the games run through Aug. 12.

Dalhausser, who graduated from 麻豆映画传媒 in 2002 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business administration, will compete in beach volleyball. The volleyball pro lives in Ventura, Calif. He and his volleyball doubles partner, Todd Rogers, won gold medals in beach volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Dalhausser was born in Switzerland and lived there for a year before moving to the United States. 聽He played basketball and tennis at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, and took up volleyball his senior year.

Dalhausser was a member of the Men鈥檚 Volleyball Club at 麻豆映画传媒, which competes locally and nationally, and he has been named Beach Male Athlete of the Year by USA Volleyball for the past four years.

The preliminary phase of the beach volleyball Olympic tournament will be Saturday, July 28.

Rising junior Charles is 麻豆映画传媒鈥檚 first track and field Olympian. Charles, who holds dual-citizenship with Antigua, will be competing for the island nation in the 400-meter dash. Charles has raced for Antigua since she first picked up running in high school.

Charles trained at 麻豆映画传媒 alongside U.S. Olympian DeeDee Trotter 鈥 an聽already an Olympic bronze and gold medalist 鈥 聽who is coached by 麻豆映画传媒 track and field head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert. The women will compete in Round 1 on Friday, Aug. 3.

Dalhausser and Charles aren鈥檛 the only Knights representing 麻豆映画传媒 in London.

麻豆映画传媒 soccer player A.J. Nelson won鈥檛 be competing in the games, but he will be in London working as a video logger for NBC Sports. The senior forward is spending more than 20 days in London watching events and cutting highlight tapes as part of a summer internship.

The Olympic spirit will be hitting the 麻豆映画传媒 campus, too. On-campus celebrations include:

  • The Creative School for Children, the early-education school for the children of 麻豆映画传媒 students, faculty, staff and the community, will host the Littlest KNIGHTS Olympic Games. They will kick off with an opening ceremony and torch lighting at the Reflecting Pond at 9 a.m. Friday. Creative School classes will compete in tug-of-wars, water-balloon throws and other games. Awards will be given out at the school at the end of the games next week.

Charles, who just finished her sophomore year at 麻豆映画传媒, was aware of her mother’s success but never paid much attention to it. Little did she know that nearly three decades after her mother’s appearance at the Summer Games, she would be following in her footsteps.

“When I was younger I didn’t really think it was a big deal. The first time I really ever sat down and watched the Olympics was 2008,” Charles said. “I would never have imagined in the next four years that I’d be going. It hasn’t hit me yet, but when it hits me, I’ll probably end up crying.”

A dual-citizen with Antigua, Charles will head to London on July 26 as part of the country’s national team to compete in the 400 meters as 麻豆映画传媒’s first track and field Olympian. The news that she would be headed to London came as quite a shock.

After helping 麻豆映画传媒 to its third-straight Conference USA Outdoor championship and competing in the NCAA East Preliminaries, Charles thought her season was finished so she went home for a break. She watched her teammates and her training partner, DeeDee Trotter, compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials from her living room before returning to Orlando for Summer B classes.

Then she received a phone call from her mother, who said that Antigua invited Charles to travel to London as part of its national team. Charles has raced for Antigua since high school when she first picked up the sport, and her biggest international achievement to date was capturing the bronze medal at last year’s CARIFTA Games.

She was hesitant about accepting the offer because she had stopped all training for nearly a month and didn’t know if she would be ready in time to compete. Her mother urged her to go.

“I said it’s a good opportunity, just go and do your best. The only thing they ask of you is to PR. Just PR and take it as far as you can go. Enjoy every minute of it. There’s nothing like going to the Olympics,” Ruperta said. “My experience overall was very humbling and was well worth all the training and time and effort that was put into preparing for the Games.”

Even though she had a lot of lost time to make up for, she had one of the best possible resources in her corner: Trotter.

Knights track and field head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert has been training Trotter, an Olympic gold and bronze medalist, since October at the 麻豆映画传媒 Track and Field Complex to prepare her for her third Olympic Games. As the only consistent 400-runner on the team, Charles has served as Trotter’s running partner for the past eight months.

“She has been a fantastic training partner,” Trotter said. “We push each other. There are days that I don’t feel great and Afia is handing me left and right whoopings in the blocks and the 100s. On those days, I need her. And on every other day she needs me. We’ve definitely been encouraging to one another.”

Trotter said Charles has come a long way from the timid-style of a runner she was when she first met her.

“She was cruising through her day-to-day routines without any drive or motivation. That all changed when I came out there and whipped her butt a few times,” Trotter said with a smile. “I think one day we were running a 500 and I don’t really run 500s, but this young lady has a history of running 500-meter workouts. One day she finally beat me in a 500. I think she felt good about that. In my mind I’m saying, that’s cool but you know that’s never going to happen again. It really caused her to step up her game when she had someone to run with and that person wasn’t going to let her coast around the track. She had to work. She didn’t shy away from it.”

Their relationship is hardly just business. It is also one of emotional support and growth. They have leaned on each other with had numerous talks over the past year, and Trotter hopes her role as a mentor has helped spark Charles to chase her goals.

“I want her to recognize her capability and her true level of talent. I think she’s starting to see her true self and now she won’t accept anything less,” Trotter said. “I hope what came out of all our talks is that she can do pretty much anything she puts her mind to and that if she works really hard she will reap the benefits to that. I think that message has gotten across to her.”

With the Olympics less than two weeks away, Charles steps onto 麻豆映画传媒’s track every day for her early-morning workouts focused on the task at hand and careful to not look too far ahead. Still, it’s hard not to dream about the experience.

“I’m most excited about having fun and running my best race. Just to soak it all in,” Charles said. “To see people that are considered the greats. I can be there. I just have to make sure that I run my race, focus on me and not overthink.”
