The event is a showcase for the students in the ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ dance classes, as well as for the student designers in the theatre department.

The event, which takes place at the Orlando Repertory Theatre, 1001 E. Princeton St, Orlando, is a perennial favorite, and nearly every performance for the past few years has sold out.

β€œThere’s a little something for everyone in this year’s dance concert,” said Director Earl Weaver. β€œWe’ve got classic ballet, jazz, modern dance, hip-hop, tapβ€”the tap this year is through the roof! It’s a pretty spectacular lineup. We have a lot of seniors choreographing this year and their experience shows.”

Some highlights of the production include:

  • In addition to the student pieces, several dances are choreographed by faculty members. Weaver has choreographed β€œThe Peacock Mystique,” which was inspired by student Jeffrey Peacock. Peacock is known in the Theatre Department for his dapper attire that includes bowties, glasses, and skinny pants. In the dance, Peacock teaches 20 fellow socially awkward friends how to dance with style to 60s’ doo-wop music.
  • The dance β€œDetention” is truly a student collaboration. Choreographer Candace Isaacs, a senior in the BA Theatre studies program, approached BFA Acting senior Terrance Jackson about composing a piece of hip-hop music for her dance. The two worked together to hit the perfect note.
  • Sophomore Abby Jaros and senior Parker Slaybaugh have jointly choreographed and will be the dancers for β€œFor the Record.” The couple will perform a trio of dances to the music of Frank Sinatra, Bob Crosby, and Bing Crosby with Doris Day.
  • Ellis Endsley, a dancer with the Orlando Ballet School, will be a featured soloist in β€œThe Kurayamino Variation.”
  • The concert is not just a showcase for the performers and choreographers. The event also highlights the work of the Theatre Department’s Design and Technology students, who fill the roles of designers and assistant designers.

As a participant in the ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ Research and Mentoring Program, senior costume designer Melissa Palomino has spent the past year researching Cuban ballet. She collaborated with dance minor Nicole Gonzalez to create a showcase for her work. The dance, β€œCuba Linda,” will be the first performance of the concert. In addition to the dance, Palomino’s research will be on display in the lobby for the duration of the production.

Theatre ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ has Zombies on the Brain /news/theatre-ucf-has-zombies-on-the-brain/ Thu, 15 Nov 2012 20:27:56 +0000 /news/?p=43137 Don’t be alarmed, the zombies on the ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ campus aren’t real. They are merely actors playing the role of zombies in Theatre ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½β€™s production of Zombie Town: A Documentary Play.Β  The new comedy will run Nov. 15-18, Nov. 29-30, and Dec. 1-2.Β Β

The play centers around a pretentious San Francisco theatre collective that travels to Harwood, Texas, to retell the story of the small town’s recent zombie invasion. The collective is presenting a play and each member of the collective comically re-enacts the experience through the eyes of several townspeople. The play-within-a-play has five ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ students acting the 25 roles at a very fast pace.

β€œThis play gives students a chance to practice playing multiple roles and personalities that quickly change from one character to the next,” said director Jim Helsinger. β€œThis is difficult to do and an acquired skill.”

BFA Musical Theatre student Jeffrey Peacock plays five characters in the show. He uses several methods to keep them distinct: each character has his own identity, they all speak differently and carry themselves differently. β€œThe physical props and costumes help me keep the roles straightβ€”one wears a bowtie, another has glasses, someone wears a lab coat…,” said Peacock. β€œThe hardest thing has been finding the character and not the caricature for each role.”

In addition to the student roles, audience members might want to keep their eyes open for surprise guest appearances by community members and university officials.

Unlike many of the other plays on the Theatre ΒιΆΉΣ³»΄«Γ½ season schedule, Zombie Town isn’t asking theatre-goers to examine deeper issues. It’s a comedy, pure and simple.

Helsinger encourages community members to attend. β€œWhen the zombie apocalypse comes, will YOU be ready? See this play and know what to do! Zombie Town is a really funny play with wonderful roles for college students. It’s going to be a blast for students and community members to come see.” The show may not be appropriate for children, however.

To purchase tickets or for ticket information call the box office at 407-823-1500. Standard tickets are $20 ($18 for seniors; $10 for students) and group rates are available.
