On December 1, Career Services in partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Affairs within the College of Education and Human Performance, hosted the Fall 2017 Education Career Fair. The event gave students interested in teaching an opportunity to meet with recruiters from districts, schools, and other educational organizations. There were 166 students who attended and connected with 42 organizations, many of which hired students on the spot.

Career Services’ Marketing Coordinator Melanie Brown said, “The event was a big success, with organizations reporting 69 interviews scheduled and 30 job offers extended. Not all organizations reported information and many were still waiting on interview results before extending offers.”

The Education Career Fair is held once in the spring and fall semesters prior to commencement. For more information on Career Services, visit: , or the Office of Undergraduate Affairs at: .

Do You Notice The Misteak? (So Will Employers on Your Resume) /news/notice-misteak-will-employers-resume/ Fri, 20 Jan 2017 21:00:32 +0000 /news/?p=75736 You may have seen someone’s resume with misspelled words, poor grammar, and sentences that just didn’t make sense.

And what do you think their chances are of getting hired?

For students and alumni who don’t want to fall into those same pitfalls, here’s your opportunity for a trial run to clean up those resumes.

Â鶹ӳ»´«Ă˝â€™s Career Services will hold Career Readiness Week, Jan. 23-27, to offer resume critiques along with practice interview sessions, headshots photographed by a professional photographer, networking strategies and workshops, said Melanie Brown, coordinator of marketing information and data in Career Services.

More than 40 employers – such as Pepsi, Harris, GEICO, State Farm, Target and Florida Hospital – will attend Tuesday through Thursday to provide critiques, and the Career Services staff will be on hand all week long to review resumes. Reservations can be made for specific companies or industries, and walk-in interviews also are offered if space is available.

Rreservations for resume critiques and practice interviews can be made with a KnightLink account.

Different companies require different things on resumes, but Brown generally recommends that prospective employees keep their resumes to one page long, make sure to proofread for spelling and grammar, list the most recent credentials and accomplishments on top, and verify that all the information is current.

Also make sure to include a cover letter, she said, and “make sure you stand out!”

Career Readiness Week will be held in the Career Services office along Memory Mall.

Career Services to Offer 3 New Programs for Students /news/undefined-64/ Mon, 11 Jul 2016 18:00:44 +0000 /news/?p=73218 Three new programs to help students prepare for employment after college will be introduced by Â鶹ӳ»´«Ă˝ Career Services when the fall semester begins.

To provide additional career footing, the programs are:

Career Readiness Week

Some of Career Services’ existing activities will be merged Sept. 19-23 to help students prepare for the following week’s Career Expo, at which prospective employers meet with students and alumni to discuss internship, employment and career opportunities.

“It will be a full week of opportunities for students to get a resume critique or practice their elevator pitch,” said Melanie Brown, coordinator of marketing information and data in Career Services.

The university offers Career Expos in the fall and spring semesters, when more than 200 employers and 2,000 students usually attend to find a perfect match with each other.

To prepare for the fall expo, the Career Readiness Week will serve as an employment boot camp, also offering practice interview sessions, workshops, networking strategies and the opportunity to have a photographer shoot a professional head shot.

Registrations for practice interviews and resume-critique sessions must be made on KnightLink at .

Career Readiness Week will be held in the Career Services office along Memory Mall. The following week’s Career Expo will be held in the CFE Arena.

“Ready, Set, Work”

In response to Gov. Rick Scott’s “Ready, Set, Work” challenge, a series of workshops will be provided for psychology majors to learn more about career opportunities.

Scott’s challenge to every state university is to get all graduates in their two most popular majors to have full-time jobs within a year after graduation, unless they go to graduate school.

Psychology is the top major at Â鶹ӳ»´«Ă˝ and at least five other universities in Florida.

Career Services is working with the Department of Psychology to offer Career PREP (Psychology Readiness Enhancement Program). The series will include career-readiness programs, job-search strategies, workshops, employer panels for practice interviews, and information sessions specifically for psychology students.

The program that is Â鶹ӳ»´«Ă˝â€™s second most popular major is nursing.

Women in STEM

To boost the career success of women students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, Career Services will host an event to introduce them to the different opportunities available.

“Women in STEM: Aim Higher” will include a mini-conference, breakout sessions and guest speakers. There also will be an opportunity for women to make connections with engineering, computer science and other companies and organizations such as NASA, Deloitte, Siemens, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman and Veritas, which are partnering with Â鶹ӳ»´«Ă˝ on the event.

The event will be 5-9 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Student Union’s Pegasus Ballroom.
