An inaugural 麻豆映画传媒 resident 鈥 who served veterans as a chief resident and whose career goal is to cure diabetes 鈥 is the new leader of the endocrinology fellowship in greater Orlando.

Mustafa Kinaan has shown his dedication to the Central Florida community throughout his graduate medical education (GME) journey.

In 2014, he was one of 麻豆映画传媒鈥檚 first 17 residents when the medical school began its first internal residency program in partnership with HCA Healthcare and the Orlando VA Medical Center. After graduating from the program, he became chief resident, overseeing residents at the VA. A year later, he entered 麻豆映画传媒-HCA鈥檚 endocrinology fellowship, caring for patients at the VA and HCA Florida Osceola Hospital. In 2020, he joined Premier Endocrinology in Kissimmee and St. Cloud, saying he was staying in greater Orlando to 鈥渃are for the new family I love.鈥

Now, he is leading the endocrinology program that trained him 鈥 creating more physicians who treat conditions including diabetes, thyroid and pituitary gland disease.

鈥淒r. Kinaan is the first GME trainee to go from resident in one of our programs, to fellow, to core faculty member and now to become a program director leading our endocrinology fellowship,鈥 says Stephen Cico, the medical school鈥檚 assistant dean for graduate medical education. 鈥淩ecruiting the best, training the best and retaining our residents and fellows has been a goal of the 麻豆映画传媒-HCA GME Consortium since its inception in 2016.听 Dr. Kinaan is a skilled educator, compassionate physician and engaged faculty member 鈥 he is exactly the kind of physician we want representing our consortium in leadership positions.鈥

Kinaan graduated from Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and did clerkship rotations and conducted research on the impact of diabetes on heart disease at Cornell University in New York. He says his experience helping to build new residency and fellowship programs at 麻豆映画传媒 has given him an unprecedented experience.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e not just learning, you鈥檙e building the program. It was a rich environment for me. At 麻豆映画传媒, I was given all the tools I need to help shape the future.鈥 鈥 Mustafa Kinaan, endocrinologist

The fellowship program currently trains four physicians per year, with fellows caring for patients in out-patient and hospital settings. While he leads the program, Kinaan continues to care for patients at Premier Endocrinology and also serves as an attending physician and faculty member at HCA Florida Osceola Hospital.

Abdo Asmar has led the Greater Orlando Internal Medicine Residency program since it began, and says he saw the young physician鈥檚 promise early in his training.

鈥淚 cannot tell you how honored and proud I am that Mustafa is our program director,鈥 he says. 鈥淭his is what we want to do with our GME programs 鈥 grow the next generation of outstanding physicians who are also extraordinary teachers. This is how we improve healthcare.鈥

Throughout his 麻豆映画传媒 career, Kinaan has received awards for teaching, and this year received the College of Medicine鈥檚 faculty award for outstanding GME clinical teaching and mentorship. He also helped create a new research infrastructure to better support scholarship by residents and fellows. Asmar says his mentee was an innovative and engaging teacher even as a resident 鈥 known for his compelling case review reports. 鈥淗e is a learner-focused educator,鈥 he says. 鈥淗e knows how to share information based on a learner鈥檚 needs.鈥

As he moves forward training tomorrow鈥檚 endocrinologists, Kinaan says he is committed to building a fellowship that is recognized locally, regionally and nationally.

鈥淥ur goal is to create extraordinary physicians who have the expertise and the compassion to create long-term relationships with their patients,鈥 he says. 鈥淥ur patients have chronic illnesses, and many have suffered for years because of their conditions. We want our physicians to be passionate about endocrinology and the opportunity to be part of the patient鈥檚 support system for years to come.鈥

Doctors cannot care for patients independently immediately after they graduate from medical school. They must first go through residency training 鈥 three to seven years depending on the specialty. After residency, many go into fellowships for even more specialized training.

The 麻豆映画传媒-HCA Healthcare GME consortium is one of the fastest growing in Florida, now training nearly 560 physicians in Tallahassee, Gainesville, Ocala, Pensacola and the greater Orlando area 鈥 with more planned. Residency programs are a key to solving the state鈥檚 physician shortage as the majority of physicians begin practicing where they do their residency training. 麻豆映画传媒-HCA has 36 accredited programs in specialties including surgery, psychiatry, internal, family and emergency medicine, geriatrics, and neurology.

麻豆映画传媒 and HCA Programs Celebrate Graduating Residents /news/ucf-and-hca-programs-celebrate-graduating-residents/ Wed, 24 Jun 2020 20:29:46 +0000 /news/?p=110549 The College of Medicine honors 137 newly trained physicians who are ready to enter practice.

The taskforce of healthcare workers battling COVID-19 got a much-needed boost with the addition of 137 newly trained physicians who are ready to enter practice. Residents and fellows from the 麻豆映画传媒-HCA Healthcare graduate medical education (GME) partnership graduated recently and are joining hospitals across Florida and the nation, entering private practice or advancing to additional training.

The graduates included 47 internal medicine physicians, 22 who trained in emergency medicine, three in obstetrics/gynecology, and 11 in family medicine. This year also saw the first four graduates in a new general surgery program, two from a new rheumatology fellowship, one in a new psychiatry program, and two each from endocrinology and surgical critical-care fellowships.

Abdo Asmar, 麻豆映画传媒 College of Medicine鈥檚 vice chair of the GME program, said that despite the pandemic, the program was still able to recognize 听graduates ith a ceremonies held for each region where residents were trained 鈥 Ocala, Gainesville and Orlando 鈥 and maintained social distancing guidelines with very limited guests.

The majority of residents graduated from 麻豆映画传媒鈥檚 inaugural GME program 鈥 internal medicine in Orlando. That ceremony featured residents led by Asmar in a decorated with black-and-gold balloons and streamers driving around the Rosen Shingle Creek resort. All ceremonies were streamed live so families could participate.

鈥淭here were hundreds of people from all over the U.S. and other countries watching to see their loved ones graduate,鈥 Asmar says. 鈥淪o even though COVID-19 might have made us do things differently, I don鈥檛 think it was less impactful than what we have done in the past. I am still satisfied that we were able to send these graduates out with a bang.鈥

Doctors don鈥檛 practice straight out of medical school and must complete residencies for three to seven years depending on their specialty of choice. Following residency training, some enter fellowships to develop more specialized expertise.

Forty-three physicians-in-training graduated from 麻豆映画传媒-HCA transitional or preliminary year programs that are required for specialties such as ophthalmology, dermatology and radiology before young physicians enter more specialized training.

Abdelrahman Attili was one of the first graduates of the general surgery residency program at the Ocala Regional Medical Center. He will go on to do a hepatobiliary (liver and pancreas) surgery fellowship at the Miami Cancer Institute.

鈥淚 had a great experience at 麻豆映画传媒-HCA program,鈥 Attili said. 鈥淭he staff and faculty were really supportive and the education program was really good. We were able to do a lot of cases that augmented my operative experience here. 麻豆映画传媒 was also really supportive for research and educational conferences.鈥

Ambreesh Chawla, one of the first graduates of the rheumatology fellowship program at the Orlando VA Medical Center will enter private practice in Tampa. Chawla said he was thrilled to have such a memorable graduation ceremony at the Rosen center in spite of the pandemic鈥檚 limitations and said more than ever he is looking forward to serving.

鈥淭his is an extremely vital time for all physicians,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e innately enter this field to serve humanity and help save and improve the quality of lives of our patients. I think it鈥檚 a privilege to have the opportunity to serve such crucial role in such unprecedented times鈥

麻豆映画传媒 and its partners created the residency and fellowship programs to help alleviate Florida and the nation鈥檚 physician shortage.听The College of Medicine鈥檚 first residency began in 2014 in partnership with HCA North Florida Division鈥檚 Osceola Regional Medical Center and the Orlando VA Medical Center.听That program led to a 麻豆映画传媒 College of Medicine-HCA consortium that now has 28 accredited residency and fellowship programs, with the newest fellowship in vascular surgery based in the greater Orlando area. Of this year鈥檚 137 graduates, 50 are staying in Florida for further training or practice. Others are heading out of state to practice or do fellowships at places such as Cedars Sinai and the Mayo Clinic.

鈥淲e are so pleased that many of our graduates will be local to Central Florida and several of them will be faculty for our own training and medical school programs,鈥 says Diane Davey, associate dean for graduate medical education. 鈥淭his is exactly the positive impact we hoped for when we launched these programs with our hospital partners.鈥

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Asmar noted that it is increasingly important to have graduates joining the workforce, especially in Florida where there has been a resurgence of cases.

鈥淐OVID-19 has presented us with so much uncertainty. But amidst all this uncertainty, one thing that we know for sure is the magnitude of this pandemic鈥檚 impact,鈥 Asmar says. 鈥淎nd what we need to reduce this impact is having more qualified individuals that can be available to save lives. The best way to prepare for all these uncertainties is to have well-trained people there to do the job.鈥
