  {"id":114297,"date":"2020-10-08T15:54:47","date_gmt":"2020-10-08T19:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=114297"},"modified":"2022-02-21T16:34:38","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T21:34:38","slug":"telecomms-pioneer-recognized-with-prestigious-schawlow-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/telecomms-pioneer-recognized-with-prestigious-schawlow-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Telecoms Pioneer Recognized With Prestigious Schawlow Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Video conferencing has kept the remote workplace humming during this year\u2019s pandemic, and it was partly made possible through the work of researchers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/peter-delfyett-optics-and-photonics-innovations\/\">Peter Delfyett, the 2021 winner of the prestigious Arthur L. Schawlow Prize in Laser Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Delfyett, a Âé¶¹Ó³»­´«Ã½ Pegasus Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/optics-photonics\/\">optics and photonics<\/a>, studies the application of semiconductor lasers to fiber optic communications \u2014 the key component of programs like FaceTime and Zoom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the backbone of the internet,\u201d says Delfyett, who joined the Âé¶¹Ó³»­´«Ã½ College of Optics and Photonics in 1993. \u201cThis is a very relevant time to receive this award as we are all very dependent on these applications during the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the American Physical Society selects one scientist who has made outstanding contributions in laser science research to receive a cash prize and certificate of cited contributions to the field. The award is named after Schawlow, a Nobel laureate and co-creator of the laser.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was shocked when I first heard that I received the award and then immediately humbled,\u201d says Delfyett. \u201cTo be recognized by your scientific peers that aren\u2019t only peers, but competition as well\u2026to me that is the highest achievement possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delfyett is a graduate of The City College of New York and the University of Rochester; his doctoral research focused on ultrafast spectroscopy. His technical achievements at Âé¶¹Ó³»­´«Ã½ include producing semiconductor diode-based lasers that produced the world\u2019s shortest pulses from a laser diode; produced the world\u2019s highest power from a laser; generated the most data from a single laser diode; and generated an optical timing signal that is the most accurate ever generated from a laser diode.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Delfyett is working toward the next stage in electronic transistors. The number of transistors on a chip continues to double every two years \u2014 an observation called Moore\u2019s Law \u2014 but physicists generally agree the theoretical end point of these shrinking transistors is coming soon. Delfyett is convinced there is a way to transcend the current barrier. His lab\u2019s goal is to combine photons and electrons to continue increasing the processing speed of electronics.<\/p>\n<p>Their target: photo-electronic circuitry that can process about 1 million Netflix channels on a semiconductor chip about the size of a fingernail. This would have immediate applications in data centers throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>Delfyett will receive $10,000 with this current award to celebrate his contributions to the field of physical sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScience gives to me a feeling of inspiration that I hope to instill on my students,\u201d says Delfyett. \u201cBy engaging in science, you have the opportunity to discover
