{"id":122240,"date":"2021-08-16T10:17:26","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T14:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=122240"},"modified":"2021-08-18T10:18:09","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T14:18:09","slug":"employee-gym-opens-after-year-long-renovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/employee-gym-opens-after-year-long-renovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty \u202fand Staff Gym Opens After Year-long Renovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Faculty and staff members\u202fhave a newly renovated space on campus dedicated to their health and wellness.<\/p>\n<p>The Wellness\u202fResearch\u202fCenter,\u202falso known as the employee gym,\u202fis\u202flocated in\u202fthe Education Complex\u202fand\u202fhas undergone major renovations\u202fand\u202fequipment enhancements\u202fover the past year. The facility will\u202freopen Aug. 23\u202fwith the start of the\u202ffall\u202f2021\u202fsemester.<\/p>\n<p>The facility is free to all faculty and staff at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u00a0and will be open during the following times Monday through Friday:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6\u00a0\u2013\u00a09\u202fa.m.<\/li>\n<li>11 a.m.\u00a0\u2013\u00a01 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>4\u00a0\u2013\u00a07:30 p.m.\u202f(Fridays the gym will close at 6 p.m.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More hours\u00a0will be\u00a0added if\u00a0there is demand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adam Wells\u00a0\u201912MS \u201915PhD<\/strong>, an\u00a0associate\u00a0professor\u202fin the Division of Kinesiology,\u202fmanages\u202fthe gym and\u202fused\u00a0the\u202fpandemic shutdown as an\u202fopportunity to continue\u202frenovations to\u202fthe space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the big goals we wanted to accomplish was making the gym a more welcoming place to\u202fwork out\u202fin,\u201d Wells says.\u202f\u201cWe maintain a safe\u202fand clean\u202fenvironment. Our hours are\u202fconducive\u202fto\u202ffaculty\u202fand staff\u202fmembers\u2019\u202fschedules;\u202fpeople can even come in and workout\u202fduring their lunch\u202fbreak.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The first 50 faculty or staff to\u202fsign up\u202ffor a free membership after the fall 2021 reopening will receive a WRC branded Blender Bottle, towel,\u202fbag\u202fand ID lanyard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Improvements in the gym include new\u202fcardio\u202fbikes,\u202ftwo Olympic\u202fracks\u202fwith\u202fplatforms, new\u202fdumbbells\u202franging from 5 pounds to 100 pounds,\u202fweight plates, trap bars and a belt squat platform.<\/p>\n<p>The gym also features the addition of a clean air system that will keep the facility cool, while also using integrated\u202ftechnology to help remove pathogens from the air.\u202f Another new feature coming in the spring of 2022 is the availability of workout videos on the WRC website, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/kinesiology-bs\/\">kinesiology<\/a> students.<\/p>\n<p>The showers\u202fand locker rooms were also renovated the year before.<\/p>\n<p>Wells, who worked in the WRC during his time as a graduate student at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½,\u202fis committed to\u202fmaking the gym more user-friendly\u202fthrough services and programs run by\u202fthe <a href=\"https:\/\/healthprofessions.ucf.edu\/kpt\/\">School and Kinesiology and Physical Therapy<\/a>. In the future, Wells hopes to offer services\u202fsuch as\u202fbody composition\u202fanalysis\u202fand\u202ffitness assessments,\u202fas well as other services\u202fto help employees understand their fitness level.<\/p>\n<p>The WRC\u202foffers\u202fopportunities\u202fto participate in\u202fresearch\u202fwithin\u202fthe Division of Kinesiology, where faculty and students explore\u202fthe efficacy of\u202fdifferent exercise modalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has always been\u202fa research component to the facility,\u201d Wells\u00a0says. \u201cIt doubles as a\u202flab for exercise physiology interventions\u202fwhen needed for\u202fresearch.\u202fAnd\u202fit serves as a\u202fpracticum site for our\u202fundergraduate kinesiology students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Stout,\u202fPegasus Professor and\u00a0director\u202fof the\u00a0School of\u00a0Kinesiology\u00a0and Physical Therapy, says that\u202fthe lab will be an asset\u202ffor researchers, as well as\u202femployees\u202fstriving to improve their health and wellness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExercise is medicine,\u201d says Stout. \u201cWe want people to take charge of their health.\u202fHaving the Wellness Research Center available on campus for faculty and staff to\u202fwork\u00a0out, and a dedicated space where health and wellness research can take place, is\u202fan asset to\u202feveryone in the\u202fÂ鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ community\u202fwho
