Sponsored by the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Community Veterans History Project in partnership with the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Veterans Academic Resource Center, the vault demonstrates Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s appreciation for student veterans\u2019 service in the U.S. military.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara Gannon, associate professor of history and coordinator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vetstories.cah.ucf.edu\/\">Veterans History Project<\/a>, has been involved with the Supply Vault for Student Veteran Success since the project\u2019s inception.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur vision is to use this vault as a way of welcoming veterans to the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ community,\u201d says Gannon. \u201cVeterans\u2019 homecomings can be difficult, but we want to use this to ease their transition to Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ and higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vault offers a collection of school supplies selected by student veterans for student veterans, including noise-canceling headphones, wireless keyboards, voice recorders, blue light glasses, smart notebooks and external hard drives. These items are provided to student veterans at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also want to introduce them to the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Community Veterans History Project,\u201d Gannon says. \u201cWe want them to know that we value them and their stories. The supply vault is also a tangible way of letting them know of our gratitude for their service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fundraising for the vault came from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/photos-macrame-yellow-ribbon-project-kicks-off-veterans-month\/\">2019 macram\u00e9 Yellow Ribbon Project<\/a>. In partnership with the Central Florida Yellow Ribbon Project and local artist Victoria Walsh, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ students, faculty, staff and community members macram\u00e9d trees lining Memory Mall. Twenty-eight of the 30 trees were sponsored by colleges, departments and organizations, including the College of Arts and Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>For history student Michael Richardson, the vault holds a personal significance. As a U.S. Navy veteran, he\u2019s closely familiar with the struggle of returning to civilian life following military service, not to mention the difficulty of adjusting to life as a full-time student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe adjustment from service really was a nightmare,\u201d Richardson says. \u201cIt was the hardest thing I\u2019ve ever had to do \u2014 going to classes. I would literally drive all the way and sit in my car, but I wasn\u2019t able to go in. I dropped out of school for about three years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the help of therapy and getting involved with the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, Richardson was able to return to his studies and found a passion for history. At Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½, Gannon recommended he get involved with the Veterans History Project. <a href=\"https:\/\/stars.library.ucf.edu\/veteransoralhistories\/683\/\">After participating in an oral history interview<\/a>, he became a research assistant with the project and was instrumental in the planning and execution of the vault.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started doing research, and I started looking at all the stuff around me that I had been using,\u201d says Richardson. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, these are the tools that have made me successful as a student; things that I\u2019ve had to kind of piece together for myself for the last six years.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richardson\u2019s experience as both a veteran and Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ student gave him a unique perspective when planning and procuring items for the vault. Having experienced the difficulties of reacclimating to civilian and student life himself, he understands how simple items such as noise-cancelling headphones and voice recorder pens can make a huge difference in the day-to-day life of student veterans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many triggers that a lot of [student veterans] won\u2019t even know they have,\u201d he says. \u201cIf I can help them avoid even one stressor in their day \u2014 helping them to get over those hurdles will help them be better Knights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a
