{"id":143119,"date":"2024-09-23T13:18:07","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T17:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=143119"},"modified":"2024-11-15T10:25:34","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T15:25:34","slug":"nemours-childrens-health-to-invest-5m-in-ucf-nursing-interdisciplinary-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/nemours-childrens-health-to-invest-5m-in-ucf-nursing-interdisciplinary-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Nemours Children\u2019s Health to Invest $5M in Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Nursing, Interdisciplinary Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s first pediatric health-focused Pegasus Partner, Nemours Children\u2019s Health is helping to address a pediatric workforce shortage and improve the health of children in Central Florida and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Nemours Children\u2019s Health, one of the nation\u2019s largest multistate pediatric health systems, will invest $2.5 million in pediatric nursing education, training, innovation and research at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.ucf.edu\/new-nursing-building-at-lake-nona\/\">Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrengthening and solidifying the pediatric nursing workforce into the future starts with leading-edge education, training and development of emerging clinicians and nurse scientists today,\u201d says Matthew Davis, enterprise physician-in-chief and chief scientific officer for Nemours Children\u2019s Health. \u201cThis Pegasus Partnership emphasizes our institutions\u2019 shared commitment to education, research and innovation, and also furthers our ability to provide high-quality pediatric care and ultimately meet the needs of the patients and families we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Building upon Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s global expertise in healthcare simulation education and Nemours Children\u2019s clinical excellence, the new Nemours Children\u2019s Health Nursery and Pediatric Unit will be a hub of training, research and innovation. It will be designed to resemble a real-life pediatric hospital unit, featuring specialized pediatric equipment, neonatal, pediatric and expectant mother mannequins, as well as augmented reality simulations. Simulation scenarios will give Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ nursing students hands-on, clinical experiences to help them provide high-quality, compassionate care for pediatric patients and their families.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing faculty members will collaborate with colleagues across Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s healthcare disciplines on research to innovate pediatric education and improve the health of children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are thankful for Nemours Children\u2019s continued partnership and support of pediatric nursing excellence at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½.\u201d \u2014 Mary Lou Sole, College of Nursing dean<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe are thankful for Nemours Children\u2019s continued partnership and support of pediatric nursing excellence at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½,\u201d says Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ College of Nursing Dean Mary Lou Sole. \u201cBy leveraging our collective strengths, together we will grow a pediatric nursing workforce of Knight nurses to care for children in our community, innovate pediatric clinical practices and positively impact children\u2019s health for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion is under construction on Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s Academic Health Sciences Campus in Lake Nona, a hub of healthcare activity and innovation including Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s College of Medicine and Nemours Children\u2019s Hospital, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The nursery and pediatric unit will be located within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/5-5m-gift-from-helene-fuld-health-trust-to-create-simulation-center-at-new-ucf-nursing-building\/\">Helene Fuld Health Trust STIM Center<\/a> on the second floor \u2014 a high-tech centerpiece in the new building featuring three times the current simulation space.<\/p>\n<p>Nemours Children\u2019s investment also will support the 2,100-square-foot Nemours Children\u2019s Health Learning Studio, one of three high-tech classrooms located off the Collaboration Concourse. The studio will feature an innovative active learning design to facilitate collaboration and small-group work.<\/p>\n<p>This investment expands upon Nemours Children\u2019s partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/nursing\/\">Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s College of Nursing<\/a>. Nemours Children\u2019s already participates in Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s College of Nursing clinicals program, providing clinical rotations for 120 Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ nursing students in 2024 to gain valuable, hands-on training at its Orlando hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Nemours Children\u2019s Health became Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s first pediatric health-focused Pegasus Partner. Through the partnership, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ and Nemours Children\u2019s will collaborate on opportunities and initiatives that leverage their collective healthcare and academic excellence to advance children\u2019s health \u2014 including the launch of a $2.5M Nemours Impact Fund, an interdisciplinary research collaboration agreement to advance pediatric healthcare and improve children\u2019s health outcomes at individual and population levels.<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ and Nemours Children\u2019s are creating a talent pipeline of skilled, pediatric healthcare providers to address the pediatric workforce shortage. Nemours Children\u2019s previously established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/nemours-childrens-health-ucf-partner-to-elevate-the-quality-of-healthcare-for-floridas-children\/\">Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ College of Medicine \u2014 Nemours Children\u2019s Health Department of Pediatrics<\/a> to train the next generation of pediatric physicians.<\/p>\n<p>With its investment at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s College of Nursing, Nemours Children\u2019s is educating and training future pediatric nurses. According to the Children\u2019s Hospital Association, 35% of children\u2019s hospitals across the U.S. are facing a shortage of pediatric registered nurses. Around 85% of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s 16,000 Knight nurse alumni remain in Florida to live and work, growing the workforce at healthcare facilities including Nemours Children\u2019s Hospital, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>After its anticipated opening in Fall 2025, the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion will enable Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ to graduate 50% more newly licensed nurses to address the nursing shortage as well
