{"id":150994,"date":"2026-02-23T10:04:33","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T15:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=150994"},"modified":"2026-02-24T13:02:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T18:02:24","slug":"ucf-career-services-turn-ucf-students-into-ideal-job-candidates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-career-services-turn-ucf-students-into-ideal-job-candidates\/","title":{"rendered":"Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Career Services Turn Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Students into Ideal Job Candidates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As an ambitious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/computer-science-bs\/\">computer science major<\/a> at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½,\u00a0<strong>Kenny Nguyen \u201925<\/strong>\u00a0was already thinking ahead before graduating\u00a0\u00a0\u2014 about internships, industry connections and the kind of real-world experience that would launch his career as a cyber analyst for Deloitte &amp; Touche.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/career.ucf.edu\/\">Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s Kenneth G. Dixon Career Center<\/a>\u2019s dedicated support for STEM students, he had access to resources so he would not have to navigate that journey alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEngineering is hands-down our most active liaison area,\u201d says <strong>Taylor Sandifer \u201923MA<\/strong>, assistant director of employer relations in Career Services who supports all STEM majors, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/engineering-computer-science\/\">College of Engineering and Computer Science<\/a>. \u201cCECS students show up to everything. They\u2019re really engaged, and they take advantage of every opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Knights like Nguyen, that means access to employers through engineering-focused employer-led workshops, resume reviews, mock interviews, and the highly attended <a href=\"https:\/\/events.ucf.edu\/event\/4031441\/ucfs-spring-2026-internship-career-expo-hosted-by-ucf-career-services-experiential-learning\/\">Internship and\u00a0Career Expo<\/a>, which occurs annually in the fall at the Addition Financial Arena, where as many as 300 employers fill the venue.<\/p>\n<h2>Big Companies Recruit Knights<\/h2>\n<p>Before Expo, students can\u00a0participate\u00a0in the Career Readiness Program, a two-week series including industry-specific, employer-led sessions where recruiters host one-on-one resume reviews and mock interviews to help students prepare.<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s employer-relations model attracts major companies such as Google, Meta, Amazon, Siemens Energy, Lockheed Martin, L3Harris and Walmart directly to campus for tabling, information sessions,\u00a0and networking events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers coming in to recruit STEM talent will work with us to get connected,\u201d Sandifer says. \u201cWe help them get into the engineering atrium, set up information sessions, reach students through Handshake, and collaborate with CECS to spread the word.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe want students to see a clear path from Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ to a career.\u201d\u2014 <strong>Taylor Sandifer \u201923MA<\/strong>, assistant director of employer relations in Career Services<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe want students to see a clear path from Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ to a career. When they put in the effort, and we can help make those connections, it all comes together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandifer has seen firsthand how transformative this can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne computer science student (Nguyen) showed up on the wrong day \u2014 in a suit \u2014\u00a0but stayed anyway,\u201d\u00a0she recalls. \u201cHe came back the next day, met with recruiters, and we\u00a0connected him with Deloitte &amp; Touche. He ended up getting the job. His hard work and willingness to show up made the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Real World Ready<\/h2>\n<p>Nguyen credits the Dixon Career Development Center in helping him shape his career path.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0very prepared initially and had no idea where\u00a0to even\u00a0start. It was overwhelming just thinking about it,\u201d he says. \u201cI attended an event I found off Handshake and it turned into me getting resume reviews, mock interviews, and attending events that got me to meet employers I was passionate about joining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took advantage of summer appointments, interview strategies,\u00a0and also\u00a0printed business cards to hand out to the company representatives at the\u00a0Internship and\u00a0Career Expo. Those efforts paid off with an opportunity at Deloitte \u2014 a place he was drawn to for its culture and its constant flow of new challenges.<\/p>\n<p>His biggest takeaway from his experience with the Career Center is to be persistent and open to every opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never know what conversation you have with someone that could turn into a huge career opportunity,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/events.ucf.edu\/event\/4031441\/ucfs-spring-2026-internship-career-expo-hosted-by-ucf-career-services-experiential-learning\/\">Spring 2026 Internship and
