{"id":23559,"date":"2011-05-04T11:53:41","date_gmt":"2011-05-04T15:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=23559"},"modified":"2019-06-17T14:10:42","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T18:10:42","slug":"a-vaccine-revolution-aims-for-safer-cheaper-treatments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/a-vaccine-revolution-aims-for-safer-cheaper-treatments\/","title":{"rendered":"A Vaccine &#039;Revolution&#039; Aims for Safer, Cheaper Treatments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An innovative way of making vaccines at the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ has attracted the support of the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation for its potential to make vaccines less expensive, more effective and needle free.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Professor Henry Daniell has been developing a new method of creating vaccines using genetically engineered tobacco and lettuce plants to fight diseases such as malaria, cholera and dengue or biothreat agents such as anthrax or plague.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gatesfoundation.org\/\">Gates Foundation<\/a> awarded Daniell a two-year, $761,302 grant to develop a polio vaccine. Konstantin Chumakov, associate director, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the Food and Drug Administration, is a collaborator in the grant and will facilitate advancement of this novel technology.<\/p>\n<p>Should Daniell\u2019s vaccine receive FDA approval, it would open the door for the production of a variety of cheaper, more effective vaccines around the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Click <\/em><\/strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½?feature=mhum#p\/u\/0\/w8iKLeM6wM0\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a><\/em><strong><em> to watch a\u00a0Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u00a0TV video\u00a0news story about the grant.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this proceeds as we expect, it will revolutionize how vaccines are made,\u201d Daniell said. \u201cWe\u2019re currently using decades-old technology that is expensive and inefficient. Our new process is a game changer that could make a global difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the global immunization effort, polio has been reduced 99 percent and is on the threshold of becoming the second disease ever to be eradicated.\u00a0 However, 1,292 cases of polio were confirmed in 2010. Having less expensive and more accessible vaccines could help combat polio and other diseases that are of concern such as malaria and cholera.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faster, Safer Vaccines<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, vaccines are made through a fermentation process that requires expensive equipment. Vaccines are made using killed, inactivated or avirulent forms of bacteria or viruses.\u00a0 These vaccines also require refrigeration and don\u2019t have a very long shelf life, forcing continual production. Injections require sterile needles and health professionals for their delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccines produced by Daniell\u2019s technique are delivered in capsule form and are less expensive because fermentation and refrigeration are not required. This also increases the vaccine\u2019s shelf life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means they would be accessible to all people and all countries, even the poorest and most remote,\u201d Daniell said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I am so grateful for the opportunity to pursue this work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using plants to produce vaccine capsules has an additional benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Once ingested, the pills activate the immune system housed in the gut, which is more powerful than the blood\u2019s immune system \u2013 the traditional target of injectable vaccines for the past century.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, Daniell\u2019s technique does not use killed, inactivated or avirulent forms of bacteria or viruses but instead uses only proteins that could not cause any disease but are effective in stimulating protective immunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis makes these vaccines much more potent, effective and safer,\u201d Daniell said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Career of Research<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how excited I feel,\u201d Daniell said. \u201cI\u2019ve dedicated most of my academic life to this because I want to make people\u2019s lives better. My dream is to eradicate the world\u2019s top 10 diseases, and this opportunity is a huge leap in reaching that dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniell joined Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s Burnett School for Biomedical Sciences, a part of the College of Medicine, in 1998. His research led to the formation of the university\u2019s first biotechnology company.<\/p>\n<p>He has published more than 200 academic research papers, he speaks at conferences around the world and he has been honored by several organizations for his pioneering work. Daniell is only the 14th American in the last 222 years to be elected to the Italian National Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>He also is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.
