Jamie Tworkowski, founder of To Write Love on Her Arms, will speak at the Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ next week.<\/p>\n
His presentation will begin at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Cape Florida Ballroom of the Student Union. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
TWLOHA is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those who suffer from addiction, self-injury, depression and suicidal thoughts find treatment and recovery.<\/p>\n
Founded in Central Florida in 2006, the nonprofit started as a movement to sell t-shirts to help Tworkowski\u2019s friend Renee Yohe, who battled addiction, depression and other issues, pay for treatment.<\/p>\n
Since its founding, the organization has helped more than 150,000 people in over 40 countries find hope and help for their issues. \u201cRenee,\u201d a film inspired by Yohe and the founding of TWLOHA, was filmed in Central Florida earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Tworkowski\u2019s talk is sponsored by the Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ Campus Activities Board.<\/p>\n
After speaking, Tworkowski will answer questions and meet with audience members.\u00a0 Cocoa Beach musician Damien Suomi also will perform.<\/p>\n
Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college and university students.<\/p>\n
Designed to educate the Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ community about suicide prevention, the Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ Counseling Center offers the Questions, Persuade, Refer program. The program, a one-hour presentation, teaches people how to recognize the signs of suicide and the three basic principles that can help save a life.<\/p>\n
