Award-winning author and journalist Roya Hakakian will speak at the Â鶹ӳ»´«Ã½ about her experience as a Persian teenager growing up in revolutionary Iran.<\/p>\n
Hakakian will give a presentation titled \u201cAn Insider’s Guide to Iran’s Turmoil\u201d at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Cape Florida Ballroom of the Student Union. The event, organized by the Â鶹ӳ»´«Ã½ Global Perspectives Office, is part of two 2011-2012 themes, \u201cPeople Power, Politics and Global Change\u201d and \u201cCovering Crises from the Frontlines.\u201d It is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
Hakakian recently authored the book \u201cThe Assassins of the Turquoise Palace\u201d about Tehran\u2019s terror campaign against exiled Iranians, which earned her a Guggenheim Fellowship in nonfiction. She also has authored two collections of Persian poetry.<\/p>\n
Her memoir, \u201cJourney from the Land of No: A Girlhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran,\u201d was named one of Publishers Weekly\u2019s Best Books of 2004 and Elle magazine’s Best Nonfiction Book.<\/p>\n
A fellow at Yale University\u2019s Whitney Humanities Center, Hakakian serves on the board of Refugees International and is a founding member of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center.<\/p>\n
Her reporting has been featured on television programs such as CBS\u2019s \u201c60 Minutes\u201d and on ABC documentary specials with the late Peter Jennings. Hakakian\u2019s opinions and essays have appeared in Time magazine, The New York Times<\/em>, The Wall Street Journal<\/em> and NPR, among others.
