A globally prominent medical doctor will visit the Â鶹ӳ»´«Ã½ on Tuesday, Oct. 25, to discuss her work providing humanitarian assistance on the frontlines of the world\u2019s most violent hotspots.<\/p>\n
Dr. Samantha Nutt, author of \u201cDamned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies and Aid,\u201d will speak from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Cape Florida Ballroom of the Student Union. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
Organized by the Â鶹ӳ»´«Ã½ Global Perspectives Office in partnership with Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Jay Garner, the forum is part of an annual focus, \u201cWomen and Leadership: A Global Perspective,\u201d as well as this year\u2019s main university programming theme of \u201cPeople Power, Politics and Global Change.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nutt is a co-founder and executive director of War Child Canada, a nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian assistance and long-term rehabilitative support for children so they can overcome the trauma of war and rebuild their lives. Her work, which provided the background for her book, has taken her to some of the most dangerous places on Earth, including Iraq, Afghanistan, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Somalia.<\/p>\n
Nutt was recently named one of Canada’s \u201c25 Transformational Canadians\u201d by The Globe and Mail, and the World Economic Forum recognized her as one of today’s \u201c200 Young Global Leaders.\u201d In 2011, she was appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the highest civilian honors in Canada. She also serves as a staff physician at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n
