{"id":33627,"date":"2012-03-08T12:20:42","date_gmt":"2012-03-08T17:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=33627"},"modified":"2012-03-08T12:23:35","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T17:23:35","slug":"ucf-opera-mounts-biggest-performance-to-reach-out-to-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-opera-mounts-biggest-performance-to-reach-out-to-public\/","title":{"rendered":"Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Opera Mounts Biggest Performance to Reach Out to Public"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Love, deception, revenge, reconciliation \u2013 it\u2019s all part of the biggest opera performance undertaken by the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½.<\/p>\n<p>With a cast of about 75 students, free performances of <em>The Merry Wives of Windsor<\/em> are part of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Opera\u2019s mission to make opera accessible and relevant to all audiences.<\/p>\n<p>Two performances will be presented March 16 at 7 p.m. and March 18 at 3 p.m. in the Pegasus Ballroom of the Student Union, which will be turned into an Elizabethan-era village.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis presents a great opportunity to reach out to non-opera goers in our community,\u201d said Thomas Potter, associate professor of music and executive director of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Opera. \u201cSince the opera is to be sung in English and is a light comedy, our key word for the production is \u2018fun,\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u00a0Opera performs most of its opera productions in English to help eliminate one of the perceived barriers that people may have\u00a0\u2013\u00a0that they won&#8217;t understand what&#8217;s going on if it is presented in a foreign language, Potter said.<\/p>\n<p>The Otto Nicolai opera, which was originally performed in German in 1849, is based on the 1602 play of the same name by William Shakespeare.<\/p>\n<p>But the production still contains lessons that can be learned today, as lead character Falstaff tries \u2013 but fails \u2013 to finagle his way into money.<\/p>\n<p>In the seven years since Potter joined Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ to develop its opera program, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Opera has presented small concerts and some outreach programs to public schools, including one full production at a high school.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Merry Wives of Windsor<\/em> is the second collaboration with the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Laszlo Marosi. The singers are students in the Opera Workshop class and will also include some members of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s Chamber Singers.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Opera Theatre in Orlando is helping out with some of the sets.<\/p>\n<p>Presenting the opera in the Pegasus Ballroom will create some logistical demands, said stage director Allen McCoy of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Theatre faculty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always a challenge getting something on its feet, and converting the Pegasus Ballroom into a theatrical space \u2013 as far as the sight and sound and look \u2013 presents some more challenges,\u201d McCoy said.<\/p>\n<p>One of those challenges is movement on the big stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may be clear how a performer uses his voice, but they also communicate with their bodies by the way they walk and move,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople look at those things separately, but for a performer it is all one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Potter said this performance is the most significant step he has taken in developing the university\u2019s opera program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a big undertaking for us, and\u00a0a great experience for all those students to be a part of a big production,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Love, deception, revenge, reconciliation \u2013 it\u2019s all part of the biggest opera performance undertaken by the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½.
