For more than half his life,\u00a0five-year-old\u00a0Cade Sinness has attended speech therapy sessions at Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½\u2019s Communication Disorders Clinic. So when\u00a0the soon-to-be kindergartner\u00a0completed his last session this week,\u00a0it was time for pomp and circumstance.<\/p>\n
\u201cCade\u2019s mother told me he would have a surprise for me at his last session,\u201d said Tom Ehren, a clinical educator at the clinic. \u201cI anticipated his surprise and came prepared in my own regalia.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cade arrived for his last\u00a0session in a bright red cap and gown. Afterwards he beamed when Ehren formally presented him with a \u201cdiploma.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ehren said he provides his clients with a “diploma” or “certificate” when it\u2019s appropriate, but he likes to emphasize that achieving better communication skills is a reward in itself.<\/p>\n
Cade\u2019s therapy sessions spanned nine semesters at the Communication Disorders Clinic, the training site for Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ graduate students preparing to become certified speech-language pathologists.\u00a0They were conducted by\u00a0graduate students supervised by Ehren, a Board Recognized Specialist in Child Language.<\/p>\n
This fall, Cade will enter kindergarten with much improved speech and language skills, thanks to the clinic, the support of Cade\u2019s family \u2014 and Cade\u2019s own hard work.<\/p>\n
