{"id":45294,"date":"2013-01-31T16:23:59","date_gmt":"2013-01-31T21:23:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=45294"},"modified":"2020-08-25T12:19:08","modified_gmt":"2020-08-25T16:19:08","slug":"knights-write-works-of-first-year-writers-showcased","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/knights-write-works-of-first-year-writers-showcased\/","title":{"rendered":"Knights Write: Works of First-Year Writers Showcased"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The thought-provoking research and writing of first-year students were presented at the Third Annual Knights Write Showcase, hosted in the Student Union this week by the Department of Writing and Rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>The showcase is an opportunity for the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ community to view the exceptional work of students from the First-Year Writing Program. The event featured student displays, panels and awards for best writings.<\/p>\n<p>Three student panels allowed young researchers to share their work with an audience. Research projects presented during the panel sessions included \u201cSpanglish and Its Effect on L1 and L2 Speakers,\u201d \u201cCombatting Internet Piracy,\u201d and \u201cGeocaching and the Use of Multiple Literacies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students whose work had previously been published in Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/writingandrhetoric.cah.ucf.edu\/stylus\"><em>Stylus: A Peer-Reviewed Journal of First-Year Writing <\/em><\/a>presented a glimpse of first-year writing at its best and were recognized by Provost and Executive Vice President Tony Waldrop.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Fernandez, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, presented awards for best student displays to Vanessa Carrillo for best overall poster, \u201cReligious Literacy;\u201d David Sheets for best research, \u201cReality Networks;\u201d Lindsay Schmit for best presentation, \u201cFacebook and Self-Disclosure;\u201d and Delaney Postma, honorable mention for her poster \u201cTraumatic Brain Injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ President John C. Hitt concluded the ceremony by presenting the Prize for Excellence in First-Year Writing to Lindsay Schmit for her research article \u201cPersonality and Its Effects on Facebook and Self-Disclosure,\u201d published in the Fall 2012 issue of <em>Stylus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The prize includes a $450 book scholarship donated by Hitt and the Department of Writing and Rhetoric.
