{"id":55254,"date":"2013-11-18T09:45:49","date_gmt":"2013-11-18T14:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=55254"},"modified":"2020-09-23T15:33:08","modified_gmt":"2020-09-23T19:33:08","slug":"ucf-assistant-director-joins-prominent-science-professionals-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-assistant-director-joins-prominent-science-professionals-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Assistant Director Joins Prominent Science Professionals\u2019 Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tara Johnson, Assistant Director of Information\/Publication Services of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ College of Graduate Studies has been elected to the 2014 Board of Directors of the National Professional Science Master\u2019s Association (NPSMA).<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, also the Professional Science Master\u2019s (PSM) Coordinator at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½, brings a wealth of experience to the Board including four years assisting in the coordination of a statewide PSM initiative between 12 state universities.<\/p>\n<p>The appointment of a Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ employee to the NPSMA represents a national interest in Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s role in expanding the PSM program\u2019s collaborative graduate education. And, perhaps more importantly, the move enhances Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s position as America\u2019s Leading Partnership University.<\/p>\n<p>The PSM is a unique, innovative program that prepares graduates for science careers in business, government, or nonprofit sectors. Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ has five PSM programs including <a title=\"Health Care Informatics\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/health-care-informatics-professional-science-masters-ms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Care Informatics<\/a>, <a title=\"Modeling and Simulation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/modeling-and-simulation-ms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Modeling and Simulation<\/a>, <a title=\"Biotechnology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/biotechnology-ms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biotechnology<\/a>, <a title=\"Conservation Biology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/biology-ms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservation Biology<\/a>, and <a title=\"Professional Engineering Management\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/engineering-management-ms\/professional-engineering-management-psm\/\">Professional Engineering Management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The hybrid degree program combines rigorous technical study in science or mathematics with practical training in leadership, management, ethics, and communication. Designed to increase industry partnerships, the PSM connects students directly to potential employers through required internships and employer\/industry advisory boards. Each PSM program is guided by employer advisory boards. The goal is to provide industry, government, and nonprofits with employees who have a deep scientific knowledge as well as skills to apply that knowledge in innovative ways.<\/p>\n<p>The PSM was started in 2000, and there are now more than\u00a0302 programs at\u00a0over 139\u00a0universities.<\/p>\n<p>The National Professional Science Master\u2019s Association (NPSMA) joins together PSM degree program directors, faculty, administrators, industry representatives, alumni, and students that support PSM degree initiatives.\u00a0The mission of NPSMA is to promote and support the growth and development of professional science master\u2019s degree programs.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson and four other individuals begin their three year terms with NPSMA on January 1, 2014.
