{"id":56282,"date":"2013-12-19T14:38:29","date_gmt":"2013-12-19T19:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=56282"},"modified":"2018-07-05T10:12:46","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T14:12:46","slug":"ucf-ranked-top-25-producing-patents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/ucf-ranked-top-25-producing-patents\/","title":{"rendered":"Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Ranked in Top 25 for Producing Patents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ has been ranked among the top 25 universities in the world for the number of patents awarded in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The ranking, by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), is based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ researchers received 72 patents and were ranked 21st on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centralfloridafuture.com\/story\/news\/2016\/07\/18\/ucf-19th-nationally-us-patents\/87259666\/?from=new-cookie\">list of 100<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ranking recognizes that the innovation coming out of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is impacting our local economy and raising the university\u2019s research profile around the world,\u201d said MJ Soileau, vice president for research &amp; commercialization.<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ ranked above such academic powerhouses as Northwestern University, Harvard University and Duke University.<\/p>\n<p>The NAI and the IPO compiled the listing to emphasize the impact university research has on worldwide economic development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUniversity inventors are the discoverers and creators of new solutions to existing problems, and, as such, are key contributors to the advancement of technology,\u201d said Paul R. Sanberg, president of the NIA.\u00a0 \u201cProtection of this intellectual property, through the patenting process, underpins the creation of new industries and employment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, professors at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ have earned patents on many technologies including a technique to detect Crohn\u2019s disease, a non-toxic method of removing oil from water which doesn\u2019t harm the environment and liquid crystal display technology, which is why we can see cell phone screens in daylight or in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>With the NAI\/IPO ranking Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ has proven itself to be a leader not just in the numbers of patents awarded but in the quality of those patents.\u00a0 Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is ranked in the IEEE\u2019s listing of the top 20 universities in the world in patent strength.\u00a0 And three Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ inventors will be honored in March with the designation of NAI Fellow for their innovative work (the three have a combined 104 patents) and its impact on economic development and society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ has been ranked among the top 25 universities in the world for the number of patents awarded in 2012.
