More than 10,000 visitors from all 50 states and Japan are expected on Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½’s main campus May 16-17 for the National Science Olympiad<\/a> tournament.<\/p>\n

In the months leading up to the national competition, Knightro has been to the northernmost football field in Alaska and to Hawaii. The squeezable, lovable miniature likeness of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s mascot has also simulated doing a bungee jump and swam with sharks at an aquarium (at least the photos look as much).<\/p>\n

Locales on his travels include Fargo, N.D.; Vantage, Wash.; Branch, Ark.; Feeding Hills, Mass.; Shreveport, La.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Gatlinburg, Tenn.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Mount Vernon, Iowa; North Kingston, R.I.; and Fremont, Calif. Just to name a very few. And all in the name of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½.<\/p>\n

Next weekend, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is hosting the Science Olympiad National Tournament for the second time in three years. Expected to draw more than 10,000 students, family members, coaches and teachers, it\u2019s the largest team STEM competition in the country and the culmination of more than 280 regional and state tournaments. A total of 120 teams from all 50 states and Japan will consume roughly 95 percent of the campus during the competition.<\/p>\n

Knightro was tabbed as tournament ambassador.<\/p>\n

To celebrate the 30th anniversary event, the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ College of Engineering and Computer Science created a sort of pass-the-torch adventure, reminiscent of the torch carrying that precedes Olympics. Ten packages containing Knightro and a customized banner were sent to 10 starter destinations with specific instructions for students to take photos with Knightro, post them to the Science Olympiad Facebook page<\/a> then send\u00a0the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ mascot\u00a0on his way. Roughly 90 destinations in 30 states were mapped out based on recommendations from state tournament directors, as teams were still competing for the right to advance to Orlando.<\/p>\n

The result: Knightro posed with some of the nation\u2019s brightest middle- and high-school students in unique settings.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the big winner is Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½, according to Terrell Hodges, senior information specialist in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, who organized Knightro\u2019s itinerary. \u201cThe whole purpose of this was to get the brand out there, the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ name. Now Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is in their brain.\u201d The hope, she adds, is that some of those outstanding students will choose Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ for college.<\/p>\n

The anticipation continues to build, cites Mike McKee, associate director for the undergraduate programs in the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ College of Optics and Photonics and co-director of the Science Olympiad National Tournament. \u201cAfter 2012, we heard a lot of good compliments about the job we did,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople were very impressed about how beautiful the campus was, how big it was and the resources that were available. There is a awareness of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ from 2012.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hodges and McKee can also thank Knightro.<\/p>\n

Notably, the guest speaker for the Olympiad is Joe Kittinger, a former Air Force fighter pilot who has since become a pioneer in aviation adventure.
