{"id":60062,"date":"2014-06-27T13:31:52","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T17:31:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=60062"},"modified":"2019-07-08T14:54:37","modified_gmt":"2019-07-08T18:54:37","slug":"magazine-names-ucf-leaders-alumni-orlandos-powerful-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/magazine-names-ucf-leaders-alumni-orlandos-powerful-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Magazine Names Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Leaders, Alumni to Orlando&#8217;s Most-Powerful List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ leaders and several alumni were named this week to <em>Orlando <\/em>magazine\u2019s 2014 list of the region\u2019s 50 most powerful people.<\/p>\n<p>The 11th annual list in the magazine\u2019s July edition represents the region\u2019s political leaders, educators, business owners, tourism officials and others who lead and inspire.<\/p>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ President John C. Hitt earned the No. 4 ranking. The top three names on the list are Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, attorney and businessman John Morgan, and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs.<\/p>\n<p>Hitt, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s president since 1992, leads the nation\u2019s second-largest university with nearly 60,000 students. The magazine praised the development of high-tech and research areas at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½, as well as the creation of the Blackstone LaunchPad to help students develop entrepreneurial ideas into successful businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Others with Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ roles who were named to the list are:<\/p>\n<li>No. 6 \u2013 Harris Rosen, hotelier and businessman. Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s Rosen College of Hospitality Management was developed in large part because Rosen donated the initial $18 million in money and land to jump-start the campus that opened in 2004. Rosen also is a former member of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Board of Trustees.<\/li>\n<li>No. 7 \u2013 Alex Martins, CEO of the Orlando Magic. Martins joined the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Board of Trustees in November. Martins earned an MBA from Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ in 2001. He is a member of the College of Business Administration\u2019s Hall of Fame and serves on the Dean\u2019s Executive Council for the college.<\/li>\n<li>No. 25 \u2013 Dr. Deborah German, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ vice president for medical affairs and founding dean of the College of Medicine. Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s medical school opened in 2009 and graduated its second class this spring. Under German\u2019s leadership, the college has begun a new internal medicine residency program in partnership with Orlando VA Medical Center and Osceola Regional Medical Center.<\/li>\n<li>No. 30 \u2013 Marcos Marchena, attorney, general counsel for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. Marchena is a member of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Board of Trustees and the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Foundation, and the university awarded him with its 2013 Service to Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Award.<\/li>\n<li>No. 31 \u2013 Jim Atchison, CEO and president of SeaWorld Parks &amp; Entertainment. Atchison also is a member of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s Board of Trustees.<\/li>\n<p>In addition to Martins, Marchena (College of Sciences, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Class of 1982) and Atchison (College of Business Administration, \u201892), there are five other Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u00a0alumni on the top-50 list:<\/p>\n<li>No. 8 \u2013 George A. Kalogridis, Sciences, \u201976, president of Walt Disney World Resort.<\/li>\n<li>No. 10 \u2013 Barbara Jenkins, Education, \u201983,\u00a0 &#8217;86 and &#8217;96, Orange County School Superintendent.<\/li>\n<li>No. 20 \u2013 Rasesh H. Thakkar, Business Administration, \u201984, senior managing director of Tavistock Group.<\/li>\n<li>No. 43 \u2013 Dick J. Batchelor, Sciences, \u201971, business and political consultant, and advocate for children\u2019s causes.<\/li>\n<li>No. 47 \u2013 Patty Sheehan, Art, \u201987, Orlando city commissioner.<\/li>\n<p>A\u00a0separate list in the <em>Orlando <\/em>article includes 12 people to watch in the coming years, including these Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ graduates:<\/p>\n<li>Chris Castro, Environmental Studies, \u201910, self-described \u201cecowarrior\u201d who also advises Orlando on improving energy efficiency.<\/li>\n<li>Joe Kilsheimer, Communication and History, \u201979, longtime public relations consultant and new Apopka mayor.<\/li>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Five Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ leaders and several alumni were named this week to Orlando magazine\u2019s 2014 list of the region\u2019s 50 most powerful people.
