Thanks to his new \u201cbionic arm\u201d designed by a team of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ students and alumni, he could grip both handlebars and keep his balance.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes earlier, Alex and his mom, Alyson, sat at the kitchen table at their home near Clermont talking with ABC World News via Skype. Alex proudly showed off how he uses his new prosthetic arm, gripping a Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Knights football and sword and a Transformer toy.<\/p>\n<p>Alex didn\u2019t take long to get accustomed to his new right arm, and a national audience just as quickly embraced the 6-year-old and the generosity of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ students. The team has now posted online the designs for the arm, which they made for just $350. Anyone with access to a 3-D printer and an assortment of off-the-shelf accessories can take the designs and use them to help other children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese students are changing lives, and I can\u2019t wait to see what they do next,\u201d read one comment on The Today Show\u2019s Facebook page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese young engineers who crafted this GIFT for the family are true heroes!\u201d another comment read.<\/p>\n<p>NBC Nightly News\u2019 \u201cMaking a Difference\u201d segment and ABC World News\u2019 \u201cAmerica Strong\u201d segment both featured Alex and the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ team on Saturday night. The Today Show aired the story on Saturday morning. Other media featuring Alex&#8217;s story include People magazine, the Orlando Sentinel and television stations across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ team is led by Ph.D. student Albert Manero, a Fulbright Scholar who leaves for Germany this week to work for the German Aerospace Center. Manero holds bachelor\u2019s and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/aerospace-engineering-msae\/\">master\u2019s degrees from Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ in aerospace engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Manero were 14 other men and women, almost all Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ students and alumni, who provided the expertise and determination necessary to build the arm out of off-the-shelf servos and batteries that are activated by the electromyography muscle energy on Alex\u2019s bicep.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s youngest member &#8212; Tyler Petresky, who just completed his freshman year at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ &#8212; developed the electrical wiring for the arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother taught us that we\u2019re supposed to help change the world,\u201d said Manero,\u00a0who is from the Tampa area. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to helping who we can, and I\u2019ll be working with my team even when in Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ team also has established the Limbitless Endowed Scholarship at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ to support future students with disabilities like Alex\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>To read more about Alex\u2019s arm and to see a full list of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ team members, read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/fulfilling-6-year-olds-dream-ucf-students-design-build-arm\/\">this Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Today story<\/a> published on Friday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Six-year-old Alex Pring beamed while riding his bike Saturday.
