{"id":66042,"date":"2015-04-30T09:09:31","date_gmt":"2015-04-30T13:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=66042"},"modified":"2019-06-17T15:16:05","modified_gmt":"2019-06-17T19:16:05","slug":"local-company-supports-ucfs-athletes-annual-breakfast-fundraiser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/local-company-supports-ucfs-athletes-annual-breakfast-fundraiser\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Company Supports Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½&#8217;s Athletes with Annual Breakfast Fundraiser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wealth management firm Moreno, Peelen, Pinto &amp; Clark hosted its second MPC Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Touchdown Breakfast on Wednesday, April 29, to help raise money toward an academic support center for Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the five partners in the firm are Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ alumni, including Christina Pinto, \u201986; Lisa-Moreno Haramboure, \u201989; Tony Moreno Jr., \u201991, who also serves on the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Foundation Board of Directors; and Rob Clark, \u201994. The firm\u2019s other partner, Scott Peelen, graduated from Michigan State, but he was easily adopted as a member of their Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ family, especially since his daughter, Sarah, is a current Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ student, and he attends all of the football games.<\/p>\n<p>The breakfast took place at the Alfond Inn in Winter Park, with many prominent community figures in attendance \u2014 including members of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Board of Trustees, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Foundation Board of Directors and Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Alumni Association Board of Directors, as well as Orange County commissioners, current and former mayors, and one of the forefathers of Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½, Charlie Gray.<\/p>\n<p>Knightro and some of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Cheerleaders kicked off the morning with a cheer, followed by opening remarks from Peelen. WESH 2 Sports Anchor Pat Clarke hosted the remainder of the event, reminiscing about when Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s football program first started, and how he used to be able to park his Mustang under the Citrus Bowl stands. He commended then-Coach Gene McDowell on taking the program from Division II to Division I-AA, as well as current Head Coach George O\u2019Leary on his \u201cculture of winning\u201d and \u201cculture of learning.\u201d He concluded with a\u00a0video\u00a0showcasing this season\u2019s Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Football\u2019s key players before introducing Todd Stansbury, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s athletic director, who stepped in to speak for O\u2019Leary, who had to cancel his appearance due to a minor medical issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen George meets with recruits,\u201d Stansbury said, \u201che only guarantees them one thing \u2014 that they\u2019ll graduate. He demands excellence, and that\u2019s what he gets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is No. 3 in the nation for graduating 90 percent of its football players, and is No. 1 in the nation for graduating 95 percent of all its student-athletes combined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people think we\u2019re in the entertainment business,\u201d Stansbury continued. \u201cWe\u2019re really in the education business. Our mission is to provide opportunity to young people and develop future leaders. Our job is to use sport to prepare them to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While there were plenty of laughs, including an anecdote from Clarke about Peelen\u2019s former reporting skills, the morning was really about supporting Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s athletes and their academic endeavors. Moreno, Peelen, Pinto &amp; Clark pledged to match gifts up to the first $10,000 raised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things we\u2019ve noticed is the quality of the students graduating from Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½,\u201d Moreno Jr. says. \u201cIn fact, we just hired another Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ alumnus through the internship program. We\u2019re very proud of the high ranking Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ maintains for graduating athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Want to help make the academic support center a reality?
