The Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ recognized U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and Florida Sen. Andy Gardiner among others Wednesday night with 2016 Public Service Leadership Awards.<\/p>\n
The awards are designed to honor elected officials, public-service professionals, nonprofit leaders and volunteers who have demonstrated leadership in and commitment to the field of public service.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese awards recognize some incredible people in our community who have dedicated their lives to making the world a better place for all of us,\u201d said Michael Frumkin, dean of the College of Health & Public Affairs. \u201cThey truly embody the college\u2019s mission of Strengthening Communities: Changing Lives,\u00a0inspiring our students as role models for the future careers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many of the honorees attended a ceremony Wednesday evening at the Morgridge International Reading Center on the main Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ campus.<\/p>\n
The 2016 winners are:<\/p>\n
Exemplary Public Service Lifetime Achievement Award: Nelson<\/p>\n
Exemplary Public Service Leadership Award, elected official: Gardiner<\/p>\n
Exemplary Public Service Leadership Award, nonelected official: Ajit Lalchandani, Orange County administrator<\/p>\n
Exemplary Public Service Organization Award: Central Florida Commission on Homelessness<\/p>\n
Public Service Career Achievement Award: Pamela Landwirth, president and CEO of Give Kids the World<\/p>\n
Young Public Service Professional Award, Jessica Schwendeman, assistant director of Volunteer Resource Center at Heart of Florida United Way<\/p>\n
Several Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½ graduates also were honored with Alumni Achievement Awards during Wednesday\u2019s ceremony:<\/p>\n

Nonprofit Management,\u2028Anna Eskamani, \u201912 and \u201915,\u2028senior director of public affairs and field operations, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida<\/p>\n
Urban & Regional Planning, Erin Sterk, \u201908 and \u201914,\u2028city planner III, Osceola County<\/p>\n
Research Administration, Winona Ward, \u201915,\u2028director of research, Management Services, University of California<\/p>\n
Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Michelle Cechowski, \u201912,\u2028emergency preparedness manager,\u2028East Central Florida Regional Planning Council<\/p>\n
The annual recognition is part of Âé¶¹Ó³»´«Ã½\u2019s Public Service Recognition Week.
