{"id":73507,"date":"2016-08-03T14:34:47","date_gmt":"2016-08-03T18:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=73507"},"modified":"2019-07-01T16:41:09","modified_gmt":"2019-07-01T20:41:09","slug":"information-about-the-zika-virus-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/information-about-the-zika-virus-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is Monitoring Zika, Reminding You to Take Precautions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ joins the Florida Department of Health in monitoring the status of the Zika virus, which is carried by mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p>There have recently been reported cases of the virus acquired in south Florida and continued cases of travelers from Florida acquiring the virus in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis, with conditions lasting up to a week. Brazil has reported an increase of birth defects related to the virus, and there are currently no vaccines or medicines to treat the disease.<\/p>\n<p>The Health Department advises these precautions to reduce mosquito bites:<\/p>\n<p>-Drain standing water to stop mosquitoes from breeding<\/p>\n<p>-Wear protective clothing when mosquitoes are present<\/p>\n<p>-Cover doors and windows with screens<\/p>\n<p>-Use Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellants, which are evaluated for safety and effectiveness<\/p>\n<p>-Use a mosquito net when sleeping outside<\/p>\n<p>-Treat clothing with permethrin or buy permethrin-treated items<\/p>\n<p>Women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should consider postponing travel to any area where the Zika-virus transmission is ongoing.
