{"id":93900,"date":"2019-01-22T11:44:14","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T16:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=93900"},"modified":"2019-03-30T10:08:32","modified_gmt":"2019-03-30T14:08:32","slug":"orlando-islamic-community-supports-new-endowed-faculty-position","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/orlando-islamic-community-supports-new-endowed-faculty-position\/","title":{"rendered":"Orlando Islamic Community Supports New Endowed Faculty Position"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ philosophy Professor Cyrus Zargar last week was invested into the newly funded Al-Ghazali Endowed Distinguished Professorship. The position recognizes Zargar\u2019s accomplishments and will allow him to advance his research, pedagogy and community outreach in the area of Islamic Studies.<\/p>\n<p>For Zargar, this means furthering his long-term goal of building connections among students and faculty to talk about religion, theology and social issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to make Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ a center of discussions\u2014a center of learning where scholars and artists from around the U.S. and the world are heard by a curious and participating campus community,\u201d says Zargar.<\/p>\n<p>Zargar, who joined the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ faculty last fall, has already made moves in advancing Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/philosophy.cah.ucf.edu\/islamic-studies\/\">Islamic Studies program<\/a>. He hosted two public events in the fall, including a showing of the award-winning Iranian film <em>The Color of Paradise<\/em>, and is working with the university to create a new certificate in interfaith studies. His long-term goal is to build connections among students and faculty to talk about religion, theology and social issues.<\/p>\n<p>Zargar believes Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is the optimal place for a program in Islamic Studies, which reaches into many disciplines, including religious studies, political science, modern languages and literature and more. \u201cÂ鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ is not an ivory-tower sort of university,\u201d says Zargar. \u201cIn each of the fields it offers for study, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ has deep connections to the Orlando community. Interdisciplinarity is not scoffed at as being beneath the specialist\u2014rather, it\u2019s encouraged. Change is not seen as de-evolution\u2014rather, it\u2019s embraced.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cCultural study is the best way I can think of to teach empathy, self-awareness and global understanding.\u201d \u2014 Jeff Moore, dean of College of Arts and Humanities<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Provost Elizabeth Dooley and College of Arts and Humanities Dean Jeff Moore presided over the investiture ceremony, which was held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ <em>FAIRWINDS<\/em> Alumni Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCultural study is the best way I can think of to teach empathy, self-awareness and global understanding,\u201d says Moore. \u201cI look forward to the growth of the Islamic Studies program at Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ and to watching interfaith understanding and connectedness blossom under Dr. Zargar\u2019s guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event was attended by many members of the Islamic Center of Orlando, including Imam Tariq Rasheed.
