{"id":94375,"date":"2019-02-13T14:08:05","date_gmt":"2019-02-13T19:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=94375"},"modified":"2020-06-23T12:14:49","modified_gmt":"2020-06-23T16:14:49","slug":"new-aerospace-engineering-doctorate-support-u-s-space-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/new-aerospace-engineering-doctorate-support-u-s-space-program\/","title":{"rendered":"New Aerospace Engineering Doctorate to Support U.S. Space Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As new commercial space ventures develop in Florida and around the nation, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½\u2019s new doctorate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/aerospace-engineering-phd\/\">aerospace engineering<\/a> to begin next fall harkens back to one of the university\u2019s original missions: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/space\/\">provide support to the U.S. space program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is offering the new degree to provide the workforce to new companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin and others that have opened facilities in the state. Plus, major research and development programs in the past few years have brought thousands of jobs to the region, such as Space Florida and Northrop Grumman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are over 2,000 aerospace-related companies in Florida with many\u00a0hiring for R&amp;D [research and development] and also working on developing innovations never before explored,\u201d says Associate Professor Seetha Raghavan, who will be involved with the program. \u201cSuch ventures point to the need for expertise related to high-level research offered by advanced level Ph.D. degrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students in the program will explore aerodynamics, propulsion, dynamics and control, structures and materials, and aerospace systems design. The curriculum will be interdisciplinary, including unique course offerings made possible by faculty collaborations between the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, its Center for Advanced Turbomachinery and Energy Research, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/college\/optics-photonics\/\">College of Optics and Photonics<\/a>, and the Townes Laser Institute.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Major breakthroughs in aeronautical and space technology the past few years show this field is making a big impact.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The growing aerospace industry is pioneering new\u00a0technologies and is undergoing dynamic change driven by\u00a0increasing demand in space communication, imagery, launch services\u00a0and space transportation. Major breakthroughs in aeronautical and space technology the past few years show this field is making a big impact, such as NASA\u2019s successful Mars InSight Lander and OSIRIS-REx mission for asteroid sampling, Virgin Galactic\u2019s first spaceflight, and China\u2019s Yutu rover on the far side of the moon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis leadership in innovation must be\u00a0supported by a workforce equipped with scholarship and research\u00a0capacity at the graduate level,\u201d Raghavan says.<\/p>\n<p>For the fourth consecutive year, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ has produced more graduates who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/aerospace-defense\/\">hired by aerospace and defense companies<\/a> than any other university in the nation, according to Aviation Week Network.\u00a0In addition, Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ College of Engineering and Computer Science enrolls the most aerospace engineering undergraduate students in the State University System.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Aerospace Engineering Ph.D. program provides a much-needed pathway to graduate education in the field and we are well\u00a0positioned to increase the number of STEM graduates in the state and beyond,\u201d Raghavan says.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates of the program will be positioned to serve as aerospace engineers and technical leaders in the industry, faculty, and researchers at higher education institutions, national and government laboratories and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/degree\/aerospace-engineering-phd\/\">program<\/a> website for more information.
