{"id":96063,"date":"2019-04-10T10:08:08","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T14:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/?p=96063"},"modified":"2019-04-15T09:48:16","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T13:48:16","slug":"department-defense-announces-9-million-grants-ucf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/news\/department-defense-announces-9-million-grants-ucf\/","title":{"rendered":"Department of Defense Announces $9 Million in Grants for Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ have been awarded almost $9 million from the Department of Defense this month.<\/p>\n<p>Enrique del Barco, a physics professor and associate dean in Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\/physics\/\">Department of Physics<\/a>, was selected for a $7.5 million Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative Award. Three others were selected to receive money to purchase high-tech equipment to continue their work in the area of lasers and photonics.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis award will allow us to develop new testing techniques and advance the theories behind antiferromagnets.\u201d \u2013\u00a0Enrique del Barco, physics professor<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>More than 290 MURI proposals were submitted and only 24 were selected. The awards fund teams of top scientists to tackle some of the most complex issues in science. All branches of the military support the research program.<\/p>\n<p>Del Barco\u2019s project will look for ways to increase the complexity and speed of electromagnets in machines that can operate at trillions of cycles per second. Success could lead to faster computers and highly sophisticated security scanning among other applications.<\/p>\n<p>He will lead the team that brings together experts from Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½, New York University, Oakland University, Ohio State University, University of California at Riverside and at Santa Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today, there are just some very basic, preliminary tests showing this is possible,\u201d del Barco says. \u201cThis award will allow us to develop new testing techniques and advance the theories behind antiferromagnets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three other Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ faculty members were awarded Defense University Research Instrumentation Program awards \u2013 the most of any Florida university.<\/p>\n<p>They are: Zenghu Chang, <a href=\"https:\/\/sciences.ucf.edu\">College of Sciences<\/a>, $358,305; Mercedeh Khajavikhan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creol.ucf.edu\">College of Optics and Photonics<\/a>, $299,870, and Martin Richardson, College of Optics and Photonics and College of Sciences, $208,148.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 669 proposals were submitted and 185 were awarded. The defense awards support the purchase of major research equipment to help universities stay current and able to conduct innovative research in science, technology, engineering and math.
