In 1994, the Internet was new to the public and Netscape Navigator had just launched. That same year, the first e-commerce transaction (Pizza Hut), the first banner ad placement (<i>Wired<\/i>), and the first Web search engine (WebCrawler) were born. Firsts were not limited to the Internet that year. The United States hosted its first World Cup in nine cities across the country, including Orlando, breaking FIFA attendance records. As the Netherlands defeated the Republic of Ireland at the Citrus Bowl, another first was underway just down the street.<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural issue of <i>Pegasus<\/i> magazine had been written, designed and sent to press. A new day had come for the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Alumni Association.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manny Rodriguez, \u201975<\/strong>, and <strong>Tom Messina, \u201984<\/strong>, led the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Alumni Association with two staff members and a handful of young volunteers. They believed they could take the association to the next level; they just needed the right big idea. The association had always wanted a magazine that they could send to everyone, but this required money they didn\u2019t have. Your reading this is proof that they found a way. As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of <i>Pegasus<\/i>, we\u2019ll take a look at how the magazine was started, and get a glimpse of its inaugural year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>1994: A Year of Firsts<\/h2>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>January: Risky Business<\/h3>\n<p>After a long lunch at the Knight Out Pub, Tom Messina, executive director of the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Alumni Association, takes a chance on two young alumni \u2014 <strong>Jim Hobart, \u201991<\/strong>, and <strong>Mike Hinn, \u201992<\/strong> \u2014 and agrees to an alumni magazine feasibility study. Volunteering leads to new jobs and Knight Images (now the Knight agency) is born. The only catch is there\u2019s no money.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>March: Green Light<\/h3>\n<p>The communications committee approves <i>Pegasus<\/i> magazine, building on the alumni newsletter they helped create. There is still no money, but there is a plan: Create partnerships and sell them advertising to fund the magazine.<\/p>\n<h3>Celebrate!<\/h3>\n<p>The contract signing party takes place at Wally\u2019s at 7 a.m. Yes, Margot was there.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>April: The A-List<\/h3>\n<p>The selling starts. Hinn and Messina work to close the \u201cdefinite\u201d yes list. The money total is now up to $0. It\u2019s time for a new list.<\/p>\n<p>The year 1994 brought several new beginnings. <i>Pegasus <\/i>helped generate many new programs for the Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Alumni Association. It also gave young alumni volunteers an opportunity that developed into a thriving marketing agency, appropriately named Knight.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>May: Alumni to the Rescue<\/h3>\n<p>Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ alumni <strong>Todd Bowers, \u201977<\/strong>, and <strong>Peter Cranis, \u201984<\/strong>, join the cause and sign the first <i>Pegasus<\/i> partnership on behalf of SunBank (now SunTrust). Momentum shifts, and sales start to close.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>June: Our Story<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Joanne Griggs, \u201976<\/strong>, and <strong>Mike Candelaria, \u201983<\/strong>, work with the Alumni Association, Knight agency staff and volunteers to finalize the content for the inaugural issue.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>July: Liftoff!<\/h3>\n<p>The first issue of <i>Pegasus<\/i> is printed and sent to 59,861 alumni.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>September: Bringing It Home<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Mike \u201cDodd\u201d Foristall, \u201994<\/strong>, and<strong> John Speake, \u201995<\/strong>, join the Knight team and take <i>Pegasus<\/i> and Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Homecoming to new heights.<\/p>\n<p>[divider][\/divider]<\/p>\n<h3>December: Click and Move<\/h3>\n<p>Joining other Internet firsts, <i>Pegasus<\/i> goes online, and the first Â鶹ӳ»­´«Ã½ Alumni Association website is launched.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":4089,"template":"","categories":[],"tags":[40],"class_list":["post-3204","story","type-story","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-journalism","issues-14","issues-spring-2014"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
